A complete stranger has given me more in four days than Eddie gave me in twenty long years.
Eddie was a great provider, a great father. At times, he was an okay husband.
But he never breathedlifeinto me.
Whatever happens between Cas and me, I’ll never regret this time with him.
Because he’s given me a gift.
I canbreatheagain.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Maryn
Promptly at nine o’clock, there’s a knock on my back door that sends a rush of electricity through my body and brings a smile to my face. I’ve been waiting all morning for Cas to show up for his coffee, but he’s doing a great job of giving me the space and time I asked for last night.
I hate it.
I was awake early this morning, expecting him to show up at his usual time, so I’ve been ready for our morning shift at the brewery for hours now and barely able to contain myself.
When I open the door, relief fills me at the sight of him.
Warmth spreads from my chest south, heating my blood and tightening my belly.
“Hi,” I say on a sigh.
“Hi.” His eyes are pensive as they search mine through the screen, his face so blank I can’t read his expression.
“Give it to me, Cas.”
His eyebrows fly up into his hairline and that cocky grin sitsjustat the edges of his mouth, making me realize what I’ve just said.
I close my eyes on a long blink, shaking my head. “The smile, Cas. I need to see it.”
His lips curve slowly, teasing me with what I know is on the way. His teeth clamp down on that bottom lip. He’s making me wait for it.
I deserve that. I made him wait all night for me.
“Cas,” I beg.
His lips pull into that big, lady-killer of a grin and I feel it in every cell of my body.
Smiling back at him, I push the screen open. “Come here, please.”
He strides forward quickly, scooping me into his arms so fast I nearly cover his work clothes with coffee. He takes the mug from my hand and sets it down, then wraps his arms around my waist and arches over me, claiming my mouth with his in a kiss that makes my toes curl.
Thank God he has a hold of me, because there’s no way my legs are keeping me upright.
His tongue strokes mine with perfect precision, sending little jolts of sensation through my body, and when he pulls back, he searches my eyes. “Ah, fuck, Maryn.” He shakes his head, then goes in for another kiss, deeper this time. He walks me backwards until I’m pressed against the wall.
The same wall he had me pressed against last night.
When he breaks our kiss the second time, I’m breathing so heavily it’s the only thing I can hear past my heartbeat thundering in my ears.
“I didn’t think I’d see that again.”
“What?” I ask, only briefly embarrassed by my breathlessness.
