I nodded briskly, and she went silent, shoving away from me. I could see the wheels turning in her head as they did in mine. Perhaps she had expected more time before being caught.

“The marriage isn’t legal,” she said, the words landing like an executioner’s blade. “I never signed anything. My uncles will find this place, no matter how secret you think it is.”

Standing with her arms locked across her chest, she gave me the darkest look I’d ever seen from her. I wasn’t feeling so friendly myself at the moment.

The marriage wasn’t legal? She wasn’t really mine? Hell no.

I picked her up, slinging her over my shoulder, ignoring her offended yelps and demands to be put down. Carrying her into the house, I stormed toward my bedroom. Thinking twice, I made a quick detour to the guest room down the hall that was better suited to my needs. Namely, it was locked from the outside. Not a usual feature in most homes, unless you’re in a certain line of business.

I set her down on her feet, and she instantly flung herself at me, hair and fists flying. I caught a glancing blow on the arm as I backed out. She tried to block me from slamming the door, grabbing onto the sides, certain I wouldn’t crush her fingers.

“Don’t you dare,” she said, out of breath. “Don’t you dare lock me in here.”

I peeled her fingers away from the frame, picked her up again, and tossed her on the bed, getting out the door and closing her in before she could regroup.

“I’ll kill you for this,” she shouted from the other side, already pounding and rattling the handle.

I was certain she meant it, but what else was new? I had things to do. With one last shake of my head at her tantrum, I turned away and headed toward my office to fix the thing she’d overlooked in her plan.

Because now that she had decided to give herself to me, she was going to stay mine.
