“Maybe another five insults.”

“Twenty bucks says he makes it ten.”

I grin at my brother. “You’re on.”

“So, when are you going to pop the question to Devney?”

My head jerks because I haven’t told anyone about the ring I bought this morning. “How did you know?”

He smirks with a shrug. “I guessed. But do yourself a favor and don’t wait. Soak up every possible moment you can with her. I think about Dad a lot lately with that. I think he squandered his time, thinking she’d always be around, and that was why he snapped.”

I don’t give a shit why he snapped, but the one thing we’ve never been able to say about the bastard was that he didn’t love our mother. When she died, he was gone too. I think about how I would feel if it were Devney and for the first time in my adult life, I can empathize with that loss.

I would be broken.

Declan gets to his feet and puffs out his chest.

Connor leans in, and I do the same. “I’m going to win,” I mutter.

He scoffs. “Just one more, Dec . . .”

Come on, Jacob, go for the jugular.

“You’re just jealous that Mom loved me more, I’m better-looking, and I didn’t spend eight years pining after a girl who I was too big of a pussy to go back to!” Jacob yells while pointing his finger in Declan’s chest.

And then . . . Declan snaps, and I put my hand out for my twenty bucks.

Nothing like Arrowood bonding time.

Chapter Forty-Four

Devney

“Where are you taking me now?” I ask Sean as I sit in his car with a blindfold on.

“You’ll see when we get there. No peeking!”

Tomorrow would’ve been the day that Sean went back to Florida. I can’t help thinking about it or wondering how I would feel had he actually gone. I’m grateful he didn’t.

“I just want a hint.”

He takes my hand in his and chuckles. “We’ll be gone for eleven days.”

“Eleven days?” I yell, tossing my blindfold off.

“Devney!”

“What? You didn’t say anything aboutdays! You made it seem as if we were going on a date!”

He groans under his breath. “So much for a surprise.”

“What about Austin?”

“Austin? What? He can’t just feed himself?”

I glare at him, but he ignores me. “I’m serious.”

“Trust me, woman. I dropped him off at your parents’ house, who know exactly where we are going. Austin is also well aware, so calm yourself.”
