Blind rage.
And something else.
He didn’t know whose neck he wanted to wring first.
Angela for being in a place she shouldn’t be.
Or Benz’s for the shit he was trying to pull.
He watched them walking side by side. Lawless was too far away to hear their conversation. Only that Benz bent his head toward Angela each time he spoke.
Lawless had come looking for proof.
And now he wanted destruction.
It bubbled through his blood while he watched Benz walking Angela to his old Mustang. The pair made their way across the parking lot while Lawless watched.
And he internally seethed.
Fighting hard to stay in one place.
This was recon. He reminded himself.
He’d needed to see with his own two eyes.
He didn’t go through over a thousand days in prison to self-destruct now.
Lawless didn’t have a death wish.
But right now, he had a brain that screamed for him to hunt and kill.
She’d changed.
Not much. Subtly. A little taller. Her black hair was shorter, styled around her shoulders, and she was dressed like a woman who knew what she wanted out of life and how to get it. The heels Angela wore clicked on the hard ground. It made Lawless feel like he was being shot in the gut with lead bullets.
She looked different.
Yet the same little urchin who’d clung to him, crying her heart out over losing her parents, scared out of her mind at being alone.
It was too dark for him to inspect her for gaping wounds and injuries, as he’d always done.
Were her cheeks flushed from whatever Benz was whispering?
Did she enjoy his company?
He’d witnessed the man in action many times, how easily he could seduce anything with a pulse. Had she fallen under the Benz spell?
A myriad of thoughts battered Lawless’ frontal lobe, and he didn’t like where each of those thoughts was taking him.
It wasn’t often he was surprised.
Having Benz tell him across the prison visiting table how he had Angela in his world and would use her to bring Lawless to heel had put venom through Lawless’ blood for days.
The manipulation he could respect.
It was Benz’s personality.
No one would expect a snake to act like anything else other than a snake.
