“And I don’t want to live with you. That’s the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. I can be moved out in an hour. It’s your cabin. Do you want your Mustang back?”
Damn, she’d miss that car. It was a vintage beauty and glided like it was flying.
She prided on herself not getting attached. Easy come, easy go. She could do with walking more, anyway. Not like she was exercising any other way. Her organs would thank her.
“The car is yours.”
Oh.
“But you loved that car. I thought... I thought you were just letting me use it while you were gone.”
“It’s yours.”
She still didn’t know why he gave her the Mustang and the cabin. Or put all that stupid money into her bank account.
She was not dramatic.
She was not a teen diva who threw tantrums for no reason.
Lawless went back to scrolling on the tablet like this was something out of the twilight zone.
Was he stoned?
Crazy?
All the above?
“You’ll have to switch bedrooms with me. I need to be on this level.” He spoke in his tone, which used to curl her poker-straight hair. God, his voice was straight out of a horror movie, and she was a little sicko to get turned on by it.
Before.
Definitely not turned on now.
“You’re not moving in unless I move out.”
“It’s done. Do you need help to switch rooms? I can get to it after breakfast.”
The statement sent a fresh rush of blood to Angela’s head, dizzying her in seconds.
It was crazy how much she’d missed him until it was a full-scale wound in her chest.
She’d missed him telling her what to do and expecting her to do it.
She’d missed that robotic voice and hardened jaw and the way his eyes took in his surroundings with only a casual sweep.
Everything in her screamed to run away, to protect her heart from the big terrible monster who’d abandoned her.
But had he really?
Or did he just have something bigger to deal with in his life?
It was a question she’d pondered for too long and still didn’t have an answer because whatever the answer, she stillfeltabandoned by her best friend, and that was reason enough, logical or not, to hate him.
Sitting mutely, too many thoughts flying around, she inhaled when he suddenly climbed to his feet and rounded the island to her side.
She flinched... like what? She expected him to strangle her.
If Lawless was going to kill someone, that someone wouldn’t know about it until it was too late.
