“Speaking of, how doyouknow Jay?”

“He didn’t tell you?”

“Until you prowled into the casino, I had no idea he knew you. Rider didn’t tell me either, which I find strange.” From the sheer force of his attention, her heart went nuts against her ribs.

“I met him when I was eighteen, and I was with him until I came to Colorado and met theSouls.”

“You were... with him?”

“Not in the way your brain is interpreting or the way Benz wanted. I worked for him. And we fucked.”

“Oh.” Air popped out of her lips.

From the way Jay eye-fucked Lawless, it wasn’t a surprise.

But it was a big fucking surprise at the same time.

He’d beenwithJay for years.

Knowing that now, things fell into place, and Angela internally cursed.

She might not be Lawless level of smart. Yet. But she knew stuff, and she should have realized how hinky Jay was when he hired her.Coincidence.

The asshole played her, probably sought her out.

And here was Angela, thinking she was so clever by spying on him.

“He never mentioned he knew you. At all. Not even once.”

“Manipulators never show their hand.”

You should know, she thought.

“You and Jay Benz, BFFs. I didn’t see that one coming.”

“No, we’re not. He wishes.” Lawless remarked, splaying the fingers of one hand on the marble countertop. She followed the action with her eyes and swallowed. God, he had long, tapered fingers. Nails that were short but not chewed. And the railroad of veins on the back of his hands made the very feminine parts of her wake up.

“I got told a long time ago I was already someone else’s BFF.”

Oh, God, he meant her. She’d declared that during one of her more open chats. What had she been, fifteen at the time? It was Halloween, and he’d bought her a bag of candy and let her take care of one of his strays. She’d been dazzled by his kindness. Of course, she’d said they were BFFs.

“We’re not anymore, so you’re free to be his.”

“I will be again.”

So, he wasn’t done blowing off the doors to her adrenaline when it spiked in her blood and made her inhale fast.

“I’ll ask again. Why were you working for him?”

Angela shrugged. She didn’t have to lie. “Money. And I heard some chatter around the MC, wondering what he was doing in town if he was a big player in New York. So, I thought, two birds and one stone, I could be useful for the club by spying.”

It was a beat of silence, and in that silence, she hated how he only stared, not giving any of his thoughts away.

“And were you useful?”

“Who knows? I told Rider everything I could find out. His guy, Marco, likes to chat, so I got friendly with him on purpose.”

It was hearing that when Lawless’ brow folded down, making him fifty times scarier... to anyone else. Never to Angela.
