“Yes,” she answered honestly. And then she grinned, losing some of the previous shock. “at least you kill cleanly.”

Amused, Lawless tipped his head down just to watch her eyes flare again. “It’s not my first carnival ride.”

“Jesus, are you this honest about everything?”

“I will be. Does it scare you?”

“I’d be a psycho like you if I said no.”

Wasn’t that the truth?

She was nothing like him and everything like him simultaneously.

Was that why he’d gravitated toward her for years?

Maybe that was the answer to why she’d slid under his skin and dug her claws in.

Once upon forever ago, Lawless had been a lost, lonely kid who had to tunnel into a wealth of strength he didn’t know he possessed. And not so long ago, Angela had to do the same.

Ah, look at him, grasping at straws, trying to make it fit right.

The justification wasn’t needed. And he wouldn’t try now.

He fuckingwanted her, and she’d wanted him when she’d been too young to befriend a monster, but she’d blindly put her hand in his.

Now, Lawless stepped back and offered her the same hand which had taken a life only moments before.

“You got time to help me with something?”

Looking at him suspiciously -good girl- she took three seconds to place her hand in his and fall into step as he took her across the club where it was busiest with human loiterers.

Nosy eyes all over them.

Wondering.

Speculating what the enforcer was doing holding the hand of a woman.

If he had a conscience, he might have wondered the same.

SEVENTEEN

“Sneaking where only psychos with strong stomachs dare to tread.” - Angela

On a hacker hunt for a sex ring hadn’t been part of her Saturday night plans.

But Angela couldn’t say she wasn’t happy on the comfortable U-shaped couch with her feet out in front of her and a laptop on her knees.

Or that she wasn’t thrilled to be helping Lawless when she knew he was the best hacker there ever was.

Dressed in lounge pants and a hoodie, she’d already eaten Thai noodles and now was drinking a Pepsi while she went through digital back doors.

It took a while.

So long to even get anywhere. She nearly gave up and admitted defeat. But she was no quitter, and she wiggled on the soft grey cushions as things unlocked.

Using the program Lawless wrote to embed code in the servers and waited for it to eat through the firewalls.

There was nothing sexier than an intelligent man.
