“Am I?” He smiled down at me.
“So much trouble.” I couldn’t help but smile too. “Now go tell your friends that you love all of them. But that you already know who your best man is.”
“Or…I can at least make them do the ring test.”
“I thought you were joking about the ring test.”
Matt shook his head. “Definitely not. It’s what I was looking forward to most.”
“Where are you even planning on getting five monkeys?”
“Tanner has an animal guy.”
I stared at him. Claude, yeah. Tanner had mentioned him to me once too. I shook my head. “This is going to be a disaster.”
“Or it’s going to be really fun.”
“Well, in this made-up competition, who’s winning so far?” I asked.
“Actually? Probably Nigel. He knows me really well. Like…too well.”
I laughed. “Maybe you should add him as a groomsman. I think he’d really appreciate it. And his speech was really nice. He does help us out so much. I want him to know we care about him.”
“But we already have that all figured out. We want to have an even amount of groomsmen and bridesmaids.”
I bit the inside of my lip. “Actually, I have one more person I want to ask.”
“Is this like when you kept adding random people trying to make me add James and Rob back in high school? Because I’m sure Nigel would be fine just helping Justin out with the planning.”
I shook my head. “No. I really do have someone else I want to ask.”
“Okay. Who is it?”
“I know he’s going to be so busy that day. But I really want to ask Justin.”
Matt smiled. “I think that’s a great idea.” And then he sighed. “Shit, am I really about to ask Nigel to be in my wedding party? What is my life?”
Chapter 21
Tuesday
Matt
“Rob, you’re late,” I said as he strolled onto the field a half hour after practice ended.
Nigel shook his head. “A proper best man must be on time if not early.”
Nigel had a great point.
Rob pulled up his sleeve to look at his empty wrist. “How ‘bout that? I forgot my watch.”
I was pretty sure I’d only ever seen him wear a watch once. “Do you even own a watch?”
“Of course I do,” Rob said. “I have a whole collection. I blame James for this. He should have texted me.”
James lifted his hands. “How is you being late my fault? We both knew the time.”
“Was that the last part of the best man competition?” Mason asked. “Because Rob definitely failed. And I was here first.”
