We pull into the garage of the federal building.

“What are we doing here?” I ask.

“Harding asked us to meet at my brother’s office.”

“Where is your brother?”

Logan frowns as he parks. “He was supposed to stay with Harding until we could all meet back up here.”

As we walk to the elevator, he takes my hand again.

“I guess I don’t understand why we wouldn’t drive straight to whatever safe house they decide to put us in.”

Logan shrugs as he presses the button for Brian’s floor. “We will probably switch cars here before we go.”

When we step into the FBI’s lobby, Harding is there talking with Brian.

Brian walks to Logan and gives him a hug. “Harding confirmed it’s safe for me to return to my place and to work here. McKenzie apologized for doubting me.”

“It’s good to see both of you alive and well,” Harding says.

I shiver, thinking about how close we’ve come to dying.

“Let’s go to my office,” Brian says.

He leads the way, and once inside, he shuts the door. “Please have a seat.”

We all sit in the area off from his desk, which includes a couch and several chairs.

“How were you able to confirm Brian is safe so fast?” Logan asks.

Harding takes a deep breath. “We have hours of taped conversations between Ruiz and the cartel. Once everything went down, we assigned several more agents to the case, and they were able to get through the tapes quickly. We confirmed the cartel won’t be coming after Agent Folger.”

“What about Ruiz?” I ask.

“He won’t come after me because his daughter would never forgive him,” Brian says.

“But he’ll continue to come after us?” Logan asks.

Brian shakes his head. “He won’t. I told Sofia everything and she told her dad if anything happens to me or anyone I care about, she’d make sure he never sees her or the baby again. Trust me, the man values his family. He won’t touch you two.”

Harding leans forward. “The reason you’re here is because Agent Folger has been able to work out a good deal for you, Ms. Manzia. I’ll let him explain the details.”

I don’t really know Harding that well, but her abruptness has me concerned.

“A deal? For what?” I ask.

Brian frowns. “The case against the mayor is going forward, but that does raise a problem.” He looks at Logan. “Apparently, the mayor is very much aware of who you are, Delaney.”

I wrap my arms around myself. “That’s not good, is it?”

Brian shakes his head. “I received intel last night that there’s a reward that will go to whoever kills you.”

Logan clenches his fists. “How many people know about this reward?”

Brian sighs. “A lot.”

Logan glances up. “All of Manzia’s enemies?”
