He pulls me into his arms, and I cry. I hold on tight as I let it all out.

CHAPTER32

Logan

“Hey, you coming with us tonight?”Ozzie asks as he stands at my office door at RHS.

I shake my head.

He walks in and sits in a chair. “Come on. It’s better than moping around the apartment all night. That’s all you’ve been doing for the past couple of months.”

I appreciate Ozzie trying to help, but I’m not up for putting on a smile.

“Maybe next time,” I say.

He sighs. “That’s what you say every time.”

“Well, one day, it will be true, right?”

He stands up. “I hope so.”

I stare at my screen. I’ve been bound to desk duty since my last assignment. The one where I had to say goodbye to Delaney. It’s been two months. I replay that last day with her over and over in my head. She refused to go, and I had to insist. It was the only way to keep her alive. I told her maybe we could see each other again after the mayor’s trial. I knew it was a lie, but it was the only way to convince her to save herself.

Here at the office, the guys all know what happened. And it’s no secret my mind isn’t right, and I have no idea how long it will take until it is again.

Reed says there is plenty of paperwork, and he wasn’t lying. At first, the guys were happy I was helping them with theirs. But then it switched to worry that I might not ever snap out of this. And I get it. Deep down, I feel the same way.

Durango pops his head in. “You coming?”

“Not tonight.”

He frowns. “No. Reed’s office. He called a meeting.”

I stand up. “Thanks for letting me know.”

Durango steps aside as I walk out my door. I don’t miss the look of concern on his face. Not something you often see from him, which tells me I really am a mess.

We are the last two to step into Reed’s office.

“I wanted you all to hear this from me. It’s good news. The judge dismissed all of Stacy’s claims.”

Several of the guys cheer.

“That’s great. Did she finally admit she was lying about the kid?” Thunder asks.

Reed shakes his head. “No. But the DNA test came back, showing he was not Hawthorne’s son. After that, she had no further evidence.”

“It’s finally over!” Lightning says.

Reed frowns. “I hope it is, but she can appeal. And based on the fact this is Stacy we are talking about, she probably will. But for today, it’s a win.”

“That’s good. Let’s hope she comes to her senses,” Lightning says.

“That’s all I had for you today. Coff, can you stay?” Reed asks.

As the guys filter out, I take a seat closer to Reed’s desk. “What’s going on?”

“I wanted to check in with you,” Reed says.
