I nod and stare out his window. “I guess I’m about the same as the last time you asked.” I run my hand through my hair. “I know I need to just get over it, but I can’t.”

Reed walks over and closes his door, then leans against the front of his desk. “No, you aren’t supposed to just get over it. It’s clear you love her. I’m sorry things went down the way they did.”

“Yeah, me too. Oh, I finally finished the full report about what happened.”

Reed nods.

“Sorry it took so long, but since my brother had to sign off on what I said…”

He pats my shoulder. “I know. That’s why I didn’t rush you.” He walks back around his desk and sits in his chair. “Do you know if the mayor has been sentenced yet?”

I shake my head. “He never made it to the hearing. He was killed.”

Reed arches a brow.

“No, it wasn’t me. Brian told me they believe it was Leo Manzia as revenge for putting a reward out for his family. Unfortunately, some other men added to the reward so all the Manzias are still in danger.”

“Well, for what it’s worth, it’s good that Delaney was able to get free of that family.”

I nod. I could have freed her from that life if she’d only come with me to New York when I first asked her to.

“Hey, I hear the guys are going out tonight. You should go with them.”

“I’ll think about it,” I lie.

Reed is looking out for me like the other guys, but I’m not in the headspace to go out and have fun.

Instead of going back to my office, I head to the front door to get some air. But I stop short as I see Ozzie and Piper in a liplock.

“What the fuck?” I ask.

They jump apart.

“Are you two official?”

Ozzie looks at Piper, who stares at her shoes. “No.”

I shake my head. They are both aware that her cousin, Durango, is in his office down the hall, and it could have been him walking through here.

This isn’t a conversation I want to have with them, so I walk past them and out the door. I’ve actually discussed this with Ozzie a few times. I don’t like keeping something from Durango. He’s my teammate, and we are supposed to have each other’s backs, not lie to each other.

Thunder runs out of the office, laughing.

Lightning is right behind him, holding a stuffed animal. “No foxes!” he yells.

“I couldn’t help it! It called your name!” Thunder yells over his shoulder. “Squeeze its belly!”

Lightning stops running and squeezes the thing’s stomach. “Lightning!” He squeezes it again, and again, it says his name.

“Huh, actually, I like this one.”

Thunder stops running and turns back. “You do?”

Lightning grins. “Yeah, tonight when Alicia is calling out Paxton, I can squeeze this and hear Lightning, too.”

Thunder frowns, and I can’t help but laugh. “That’s sick even for you,” I say.

Lightning spins. “Coff? Are you laughing?”
