“What kind of work?”
“Logan, don’t press it,” Brian says through the phone. He must have guessed who I was talking to.
Rocky laughs. “Good work. And if you end up marrying my daughter, I’ll give you a promotion.”
I frown. “Are you trying to bribe me to marry your daughter?”
He shakes his head. “No, just letting you know that if you become family, I’ll take care of you. But if you try to take Delaney away, well, I won’t be so nice. We’ll talk about the details tomorrow.”
He drives away, not giving me a chance to disagree.
“He’s gone,” I say. “I overheard him earlier. He set up a meeting, and I think a cop might get killed.”
My brother sighs. “Logan, you need to get out of there. I’ll look into this meeting and see if anyone is aware of it.”
“Okay. Thank you. I’ll leave in the morning.”
How the hell am I supposed to leave without raising questions when I don’t even have my own car? And I can’t leave without talking to Delaney. I have to know what she knows. Fuck, if she’s using me… No, that can’t be it. Now her father might have arranged something, somehow.
I close my eyes. No, Rocky is protective. He wouldn’t have sent her in to have sex with me. Besides, it was only supposed to be one night.
I’m overthinking this. Until I talk to Delaney, I won’t know what she knows or doesn’t know.
CHAPTER8
Delaney
“Delaney, can I have a word?”
I spin to find my father standing in my bedroom doorway.
“Yes, of course.” Anything that will help take my mind off the fact Logan went out for a quick errand nearly three hours ago and isn’t answering his phone.
“When you told me you wanted to move to Virginia, it caught me off guard. And I may have overreacted. I’m sorry.”
I’m stunned he’s admitting this, but this is good. “Does that mean you are okay with my going?”
He sits on my bed and pats the space next to him. I sit down.
“I have another proposal for you. Once Logan is out of the service, I’d like to offer him a position in one of my companies.”
“Really?”
He nods. “I’m not sure where his interests lie, but I’m sure we could work out something. Then you two can get a place nearby. I’ll pay for it. That way, you two can be together and I don’t have to worry about my daughter being so far away.”
Logan had said on our calls he would move here after he was out of the service. This solves almost everything, except we could go an extra year without seeing each other. But we could if I moved to Virginia, too.
“You’re quiet. Don’t you like my plan?” my dad asks.
I nod. “I do, but I’d like to add one more thing.” I take a deep breath, nervous to ask. “If Logan gets any leave time in this last year, I’d like to fly to Virginia to be with him.”
My dad stiffens beside me. “Why? Why not have him return here?”
“I’d like to meet his friends and his brother at some point.”
He stands up. “Okay, I think we can figure something out.”
I stand up and hug him. “Thank you for understanding.”
