“Who was that?”
Duke shakes his head. “No one.”
“Was it Logan?” I haven’t said his name in all these years.
Nelson turns to me, rage in his eyes. “Who the fuck is Logan?”
Duke’s eyes widen. “The boy you dated while you were in college?”
“Are you in contact with him?” Nelson asks.
Duke glares at him. “Leave her alone.” Then he turns his eyes back to me. “It wasn’t him. Now drop it.”
And I do. But now that I’ve felt Logan’s presence again, I can’t stop thinking about him. I want to know if he is near. I need to know.
CHAPTER3
Logan
“Hurry!”a muffled voice yells.
“Get in there!” someone else yells.
Something touches my back. “I found him!”
The pile of dirt on me slowly becomes lighter and lighter. When it first came in, I thought quickly and hunched over, attempting to keep the area around my nose and throat clear. But the oxygen was running out fast. Thank God they were right here.
“You get that arm, and I’ll pull this one,” a man says.
They lift me, and within seconds, I’m free of the grave. I’m released on the grass, where I cough and sputter, trying to get in air and get the dust and dirt out.
“What the fuck? I told you not to come here!” Brian yells at me.
“Thanks for the save,” I get out between coughs.
“If it weren’t for me following your ass, you’d be dead. Dammit, Logan! I knew you’d come despite my order.”
I wipe as much of the dirt off as I can. “I saw you near Rocky’s grave. But I will admit, I wasn’t sure if you followed me or were already here.” I continue to cough.
“Take him to the hospital,” Brian tells a man.
I’d argue, but my lungs feel like I’ve inhaled thousands of mini razors, so I probably should get checked out.
“Hey, I’m Larkin. Nice to meet you finally. My car is this way,” the man says.
As I follow him to a black sedan, I notice he’s covered in dirt. He saved me.
“Thanks,” I say.
We both get in the car but before he starts it, he turns and stares at me.
“What?” I ask.
The man chuckles. “The way your brother talks about you. He’s clearly very proud of you, but he says you’re an idiot, too.”
I grin. “That about sums up our relationship.”
Larkin starts the car and drives slowly until we are out of the cemetery. “I don’t have any siblings, but it must be nice to have that automatic best friend.”
