I want to ask more, but he made it clear the other day that he didn’t want to see me again. He’s only here because his brother asked him to be. That much, I’m sure of. So, I don’t ask. Sometimes you don’t want to know the answers.

CHAPTER11

Logan

I’msurprised when my brother calls back so soon. Hopefully, he has a solid plan.

“Hey, you’re on speakerphone again,” I answer.

“Good. You all should hear this. I’ve talked to Reed, and this is now officially your assignment.”

I frown. “Okay, not sure why everyone needed to hear that.”

Brian laughs. “There’s more, dumbass. Reed and I worked out a plan. The three of you will be flying out of Phoenix tonight to New York City. Reed is arranging a place for the three of you to stay.”

I rub my eyes. I’ve been awake for over twenty-four hours, driving for most of them. The idea of driving all the way to Phoenix, well, it isn’t my first choice.

“Logan?”

“Yeah, I’m here.”

“I’ll send you the flight information. I gotta go. Call me if you have any questions.”

I reach for the coffee Delaney got me, only to discover it’s empty. The moment we hit the road again, I’d downed it.

“Here,” she says, handing me hers. “I only drank half.”

“Thanks.” I take it and down it, too.

Duke snores in the backseat.

“You two not get much sleep last night?” I ask.

She scoffs. “We got five hours, but he’s always been like this. It’s why he always has to set an alarm. He could sleep all day.”

I glance back at Duke lying across the back seat as best he can fit. “That doesn’t sound healthy.”

She shrugs. “It’s not like he keeps great hours.”

The only sound in the car is Duke’s snoring for the next thirty miles. So many questions run through my mind, and finally, my curiosity wins out. I need to know what she knows.

“You and Duke were running.”

She turns to me but doesn’t respond.

“Do you know what you were running from?”

“Duke said Nelson framed him, and some guys put out a hit on him and his family, which means me.”

I nod. “Not your mom?”

“She’s out of the country.”

Well, good for her. I bet once Rocky died, she finally had a taste of freedom.

“Do you know who it is coming after you or how Nelson set your brother up?”

She reclines her seat a bit. “No. He wouldn’t tell me. He never tells me anything about the business. All I know is what I’m told to work with at the office.”
