I glance over, and she’s staring down at her hands in her lap.

“Really? You just do what you’re told?”

She looks up and arches a brow. “Yes, is that hard to believe?”

I blink a few times. “Well, yeah. If I had told you what to do, you would have told me to leave.”

“That’s what I did, isn’t it?” She turns away.

We both know she’s referring to the night I asked her to run away with me. I’d discovered her father was being investigated by my brother, and he told me I had to get out of there. When I told her about her dad, she didn’t believe me and refused to leave her family.

“I should have listened to you.” Her words are so faint I wonder if I heard her correctly.

“Where are we?” Duke sits up in the back seat.

“On our way to Phoenix,” Delaney says.

He looks out all the windows. “I need to take a piss. Is this coffee for me?”

“Yes, but it’s cold now,” she says.

He chugs it. “Still coffee, but why the hell is the cup so small?” Then he removes the lid, and the sound of his pants unzipping catches my attention.

“What are you doing?” I glance back, and to my horror, the man is relieving himself into the cup.

“You better not spill any of that,” I warn.

“I’m not worried,” Duke says.

The stream of piss sounds too strong for that small cup, and moments later, my fear is confirmed.

“Oh shit, the cup is almost full.”

Delaney grabs her cup and pulls off the lid. “Here, use this.”

“I don’t have enough hands. Take this first!” he yells.

She leans forward. “I’m not grabbing your piss cup!”

“Take it! Fast! It’s going to overflow!” He’s panicking as I take the next exit.

I pull off the side of the exit and turn in my seat. The cup is filled to the rim. I grab it and hand him the empty cup.

Then I realize I’m holding a cup of piss. This is not what I signed up for. It’s yellow and stinks. I do the only thing I can. I open my window and throw out the cup. Now I’m not a litterer, but I’ll be damned if I’m holding another man’s piss that was seconds from ending up on me.

“Ah, that feels so much better!” Duke leans past me, his new fresh cup of pee coming way too close to my face.

“Get that the hell away from me!”

He tosses the cup out my window as well.

Okay, this is too much. “Sit back down!” I yell. “If you have to pee again, we will stop. If you whip your dick out in my car again, I will punch it. Do you understand?”

Duke winces as he leans back and zips up his pants. “Ouch. You don’t have to be so hostile.”

Hostile? I blow out a breath. If this is how he’s going to be, I’m going to need someone to help in New York. Ah, yes, this would be a good way to get back at Lightning for all the crap he’s pulled on me over the years. The thought of it makes me smile. I’ll make sure to let Reed know I will need his help.

The rest of the drive is less eventful. Duke asks to stop at a restroom once before we arrive in Phoenix, which gives me a chance to read the details of our flight that Brian sent. We’re almost to the rental car drop-off when Reed calls.
