“We’re good,” he says.

Fine with me, but if he gets pulled aside, we’re not waiting for him.

As we approach security, Delaney grips her purse tightly as she glances around. Duke stares straight ahead as if he doesn’t have a care in the world.

If I had any doubts as to what Delaney knew about the business, I don’t now. It’s clear Duke is used to hiding things, and Delaney is scared to get caught.

Fortunately, we all make it through security with no issues. We make it to our gate as the last group is boarding. I scan everyone, and no one appears suspicious. We board, and since the tickets were purchased last minute, we are all sitting apart from each other. That’s probably for the best because, frankly, I need some sleep.

The moment I’m buckled in, I lean my head back and I’m out.

“Sir. Excuse me, Sir.”

I blink a few times, wondering why someone is being so loud.

“Sir. Sorry to wake you.”

I open my eyes, and one of the attendants is staring at me. “The man back there ordered a drink and said you would pay for it.”

I turn in my seat and spot Duke smiling at me. He gives me a little wave. On the one hand, I could be a dick and refuse. But maybe this will keep him happy. I doubt he’ll sleep at all after he slept all day in the car.

“Sure,” I say. “And also, anything the woman in twenty-three b wants as well.”

I hand her my credit card. “Thank you. I’ll be right back.”

A moment later, she returns with my card and hands it to me.

“How long have we been in the air?” I ask.

“About an hour,” she says. “Would you like anything to drink? You were asleep when we went past.”

I shake my head. “No, thank you.” All I want is sleep because I need to be alert once we land.

CHAPTER12

Delaney

My first timeon a plane and it’s while on the run from some men who want to kill Duke and me. Not what I imagined. But then, I never would have imagined Logan being the man tasked with keeping us safe, especially after what he said the other day. Is that why he was in town? He knew something might happen to us?

And what does his keeping us safe mean? Will he be staying in the same hotel room or apartment with us? Or will we be locked away in New York until someone says it’s safe?

New York City. I’ve never been there but always wanted to go. Is that where Logan lives? I still don’t know anything about him or what has happened to him over the years. It’s not like I can ask much with Duke here.

Dammit, my mind is going a mile a minute. I take several deep breaths.

“I’m a nervous flyer, too,” the man next to me says. Before I can correct him, he continues. “I have to take something before each flight.” He reaches into his pocket. “Would you like one?” He holds out a prescription bottle.

“No, thank you.” Yeah, that’s the last thing I need is to take some random pills from some guy on the airplane.

“A glass of wine might work, too,” he offers.

“I’m fine.”

He turns away, and I’m thankful for the peace. If I had my phone, I would at least have something to do. What I should do is sleep, since I have no idea what will happen once we land.

I close my eyes, and images of Logan from twelve years ago fill my mind. The first time I saw him, I thought he was out of my league, but Sam pushed me to talk to him. When he smiled, I was a goner. That week we spent together was magical, and despite all the hurt he caused, I wouldn’t take it back. Those memories are the only thing that has gotten me through these last few years.

I’m jolted awake by the plane touching down.
