“You’re on speakerphone,” Logan tells Brian.
“Oh, hi, Delaney. The woman’s name is Samantha Hatten.”
My best friend? She said she was with my brother? They kissed at the hospital. I heard it. Are they in a relationship? I was so angry when I confronted them that I forgot to ask.
Is it possible they have been together since they set Logan and me up? Maybe before then? No, Sam has dated men over the years. She can’t be with my brother. She would have told me. Wouldn’t she?
“We’re making sure all our informants know it wasn’t Duke, and they are getting the word out. Hopefully, Duke and Delaney will be safe soon. And then you can go back to New York.”
Back to New York. Where he lives. Where his job and friends are. And it’s nowhere near me.
“That’s great news,” Logan says, but he’s frowning.
I meet his gaze, wondering if he’s thinking the same thing.
“I need to go. Thanks, Brian.” He ends the call.
“You’re going back to New York.” It’s not a question. “And I’m staying here. What happened a moment ago can’t happen again.” Even as those words come out of my mouth, they feel wrong. The idea of this man walking away again makes me ill.
He stares at me for a moment. “Would you consider moving to New York?” he asks.
I stare up at the ceiling. “And do what? Everything I know is in San Diego.”
He turns away from me, then walks to the bathroom and slams the door.
Here we are again. I know if I ask him to move here, he’ll say no. If I want to give this a try, I’ll have to make all the sacrifices, not him.
He storms out of the bathroom. “Why are we here again?”
I jump up. “Because you keep putting us here!” I yell. I’m angry and no longer willing to hold back. “Just like before, you want me to move and give up everything and you sacrifice nothing.”
His phone rings again, and I want to throw the damn thing out of the window. He walks toward the phone.
“Ignore it,” I say.
His head drops. “I can’t. It’s Fox.”
Fox, the man watching my brother.
He answers the phone and sighs as he sits on the bed. “Okay, I’ll let her know.”
He turns to face me. “Apparently, Duke is demanding to speak to you.”
I know I need to talk to my brother, but I’m still so angry. I’ve actually been thankful he threw my phone out of the window so I don’t have to talk to Sam, either.
“Fine. I’ll talk to him.”
Logan puts the phone back to his ear. “All right, put him on.” Then he hands the phone to me.
“Hello?”
“Delaney! I’m so sorry. You walked out before I could explain,” Duke says.
“You explained. Dad ordered you to compromise the FBI investigation. You and Sam used me to do it.”
“We didn’tuseyou. Sam thought you would have some fun, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t like the idea of you making out with the guy. Then I found out you slept with him. I was furious at Sam for letting it get that far.”
I roll my eyes. “Stop. I don’t want to hear anymore.” I end the call and hand the phone to Logan.
