“Moving in together, huh?” Axel says. “So, when’s the wedding?”
The asshole thinks he’s making me uncomfortable, but he’s not.
“I want to give Piper some time to get used to the idea of us before I propose.”
Axel’s brows shoot up. “I should have known you were ready. Sorry I haven’t been around lately. I miss our talks.”
“Me too. But I get it.”
Axel nods. When he’s not on assignments, he’s been helping his sister. I don’t know the details. I’ve asked him if he wanted to talk about what’s going on last month, and he said not really. I left it alone.
“After you two are settled, let me buy you a drink to celebrate,” Axel says.
“Sounds good,” I say.
“Moose and Axel,” Reed says as he walks down the hall toward us. “Got a last-minute assignment I need you two for.”
“The party never ends,” Axel says as he claps me on the shoulder.
“Have fun,” I say as those two follow Reed back to his office.
I turn to Piper, who is staring at me in wonder. “What?”
“Are you really ready to get married?”
“I am. But don’t worry, when the time is right, I plan on a big proposal.”
She shakes her head. “Big? I don’t need big. Just you.”
I pull her back into Durango’s office, where I give her a light kiss. “I love you.”
“I love you, too, Ozzie.”
CHAPTER 43
Ozzie
I glance over at Durango as he drives us on a back road in Montana. “Do you think your cousin will be mad?” I ask.
He laughs. “No. She’ll thank us. Now, her parents, on the other hand, might be mad.”
I rub my hands together. It might be early spring, but it’s still cold here. “I’m not sure I really want to meet them,” I admit.
Durango, Piper, and I flew out to Montana together last night. Fortunately, we were able to stay at Durango’s parents’ house last night. I didn’t want to meet Piper’s parents for the first time after a day of travel. That’s the excuse I told Durango and Piper. Really, I’m still angry with them for what they did to Piper, pushing her to be with John all that time. I’d hoped the fresh mountain air would calm me before I had to face them.
While I still think they’re assholes, they are coming around, and I have to play nice for Piper’s sake. Althoughonce they find out what Durango and I did this morning, they might not like me so much, either.
We return to Durango’s parents’ place to find Piper awake and waiting on the porch for us.
“Where did you two go?” Piper asks.
Durango glances at me.
“We can talk about it on the way to your parents’ house,” I say.
“Okay, that sounds ominous,” she says as she stands up.
We get into the car and are halfway down the road before Piper clears her throat. “Are you going to make me ask again?” She glances at Durango and then at me in the back seat.
