The man glares at me. “Walton.”
The woman sobs. “He asked you to kill both of us? Why?” she asks.
He shrugs. “I didn’t ask. None of my business.”
Sirens grow louder, and we wait for the police to arrive. Sure enough, they do within minutes. I meet them out front.
“Hands up!” an officer yells from his car.
I hold my hands up.
“A resident from that development called in and said multiple shots were fired here,” the officer says.
I glance over and now see a large development of homes. “Yes, that’s right.” I turn my gaze back to the officer. “Five men kidnapped Senator Walton’s wife and son. We were hired to protect his son and were able to follow the men here. The wife and son are safe inside, but four of the kidnappers are dead. One is still alive inside, and he is willing to tell you everything.”
Two more police cars and an ambulance pull into the lot.
“Well, that sounds all wrapped up,” the officer says.
As the other officers get out of their cars, there is chaosas Lightning and I are put in custody in the back of two different police cars.
The man shot in the leg is taken away in the ambulance. JB and his mother are sitting in front of the warehouse, being questioned.
I swear time moves in slow motion and it’s an hour before an officer finally comes to the car to talk to me.
“You are Braxton Zavala?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Braxton Zavala, you are under arrest on suspicion of murder…”
I don’t hear anything he says past that point. And I sure as shit don’t say a word. We needed to get JB and his mom out of here and we failed. Now, we have to hope these officers protect them.
We drive past the car that Lightning is in, and we lock eyes. This is fucked up. The officer wouldn’t even look at my ID from Reed Hawthorne Security. Nor would he call Reed.
We need to get out of this situation before JB and his mother are let go. We have no idea how many others might be out there working for the senator. Will he finish the job he started? As far as he knows, no one is ratting him out.
CHAPTER 29
Piper
A loud pounding on my door wakes me. “Piper, get up. We need to go,” Durango says.
I jump up, my heart in my throat, and open the door. “Is it John?”
“No, it’s Ozzie and Lightning. They’ve been arrested, and Reed isn’t answering his phone. I want to be there when bail is set.”
“Arrested?”
“I’ll fill you in on the way.”
It’s light outside, and I glance at my clock. My alarm is set to go off in ten minutes. “Okay, I’ll get ready fast,” I say.
He leaves, and I change and brush my teeth. I walk to the kitchen, and he hands me a piece of toast and a coffee.
“It’s a bit of a drive. I figured you could eat on the go.”
“Okay.” I follow him to his car, finishing my toast as we walk.
