* * *

I knew the moment she opened the door she was going to run. I’ve been blowing up her phone, but now my messages are coming back as unread. I know she blocked my number. I’m pissed, but I can’t leave the warehouse because we have to keep an eye on Mick.

Fecking Moira’s brother is the investigator on the serial killer case. He’s trying to pin Caddy’s murder on Mick. He’s saying Mick must have killed her and staged it to look like the work of the serial killer.

I text my da, not caring how late it is. I need to check if he still has guards on her.

Me

Do you still have eyes on my girl?

Da

Yes. She’s safe. Let her be for a bit.

Me

No.

Da

I have eyes on her. She needs time to get her head straight. I’ve lined up a better job for her.

Da

And I’ve got some information she needs.

Me

What?

I’m about to step out of my office to call my da so he can explain, when Eoin asks Mick a question I won’t let fly.

“Did she sleep with other men besides you? Maybe you got jealous and killed her in a fit of rage. What about Mr. Tiernan here? He could have been sleeping with her.”

“Solicitor.” I say the one word, and Mick confirms he wants one.

Upset with the decision, Investigator Kelly storms out of the room and tries to shoulder-check me as he passes. He almost crashes into the wall when I step out of reach, and a couple of my officers chuckle. Eoin whips around, but they’re not intimidated. Instead, they laugh harder.

“Get out until you have cause,” I growl.

“Stay away from my sister.” Eoin leans toward me.

The urge to slam him into the wall is so strong it must show on my face because Carson, my VP, walks over and places his large hand on my shoulder.

“Come on, Prez.” He pulls me away, and I move to my desk.

“Out. I have a call to make.” As soon as the room is empty, I dial my father’s number. “What are you talking about?” I ask by way of greeting.

“Nice to talk to you too, son.”

“Explain.”

“I got her a job. It’s better hours. She’ll be under our eye all the time, and it’s much safer. Plus, she’ll be perfect for it.”

“Where?”

“You’ll see soon enough. Don’t worry. Give her some time. I have her under constant watch. She’s looking for a new place to stay, and I’m going to help with that too.”
