“This ain’t your business,” I heard one of the officers tell him.
“The fuck you mean? You ain’t said shit about why he was thrown to the ground and put in cuffs.”
“If you don’t want to join him, I suggest you back up.”
I was aggressively pulled from the ground and forced to my feet. The officers dragged me to the nearest police car, and before they forced me inside, I got a quick look at Tia. Her face appeared swollen, and the area under her eyes was puffy and bruised.
It looked like someone had beat her ass, and I knew damn well she wasn’t trying to pin that bullshit on me. However, since I was handcuffed in the back of a squad car, that must’ve been exactly what she’d done. I released a deep breath to calm my nerves. I had too much to lose to allow my temper to make this situation any worse than it was.
“I’ll contact our attorney and see what he can find out,” Shyne offered, and I nodded.
The ride to the station was silent, but my mind was racing with thoughts of what my immediate future held. When we arrived at the station, just like before, the officers were unnecessarily rough. I wasn’t resisting, so their aggressivenesswas uncalled for. Twenty minutes later, I was in a holding cell and knew I’d end up spending the night here.
I’d been on the straight and narrow for almost three years and hadn’t received so much as a speeding ticket. It pissed me off that the reason I was sitting in the cell was because of some fake ass accusations. I’d never put my hands on a woman in a violent manner, but after this stunt, Tia could most definitely be the first.
“Fuck!”
“What doyou mean he got arrested?”
It was a little after seven, and Shyne was on my phone telling me that Breeze had been arrested.
“The cops showed up when we were leaving the building. It was four or five squad cars. Tia jumped out of one of them, pointing at Breeze.”
“Tia? Shit! There’s no telling what she told them.”
“I couldn’t hear what she said because I was too busy processing the scene. The cops bumrushed him, threw him to the ground, put him in cuffs, and shoved him into the back of one of the squad cars.”
“They didn’t say what he was being arrested for?”
“No. They didn’t read him his rights. I recorded as much as I could. I’ve already reached out to our business attorney and sent him the video. He agreed to go down to the station to find out what’s going on, but he said he would connect us with a criminal attorney tomorrow. They can only hold him for seventy-two hours if they don’t charge him.”
“Seventy-two hours is too long when he ain’t done shit. What the fuck!”
“Calm down, Mel. I know this is fucked up, and I know I’ll be saying the same thing to Raine when I tell her. The last thing we need is you two stressing the babies out. As fucked up as it is, Breeze ain’t no bitch, and he ain’t new to this shit. He’ll be all right.”
“Do you think they’ll let him call me?”
“He should get at least one phone call, and I assume he’ll use it to call you.”
“This pisses me off. That ho made up some lies because he was done with her. Why can’t people bow out gracefully?”
“Some people can’t let go and move on. I’ll keep you posted if I hear anything, and you do the same.”
“Thanks, Shyne.”
We ended the call, and I tossed my phone to the empty space beside me on the couch. I closed my eyes, let my head fall back, and took several deep breaths. Tonight would be the first time I slept without Breeze since our first night together. The thought of him sleeping in a jail cell pissed me off, but there was nothing I could do about it, . . . or was there?
I picked up my phone and found my sister’s contact. She answered after the first ring.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“I need you to come with me somewhere?”
“Where?”
“Meet me in the lobby in two minutes, and I’ll tell you.”
“Okay.”
