“Purple sparks are something that even hundreds of years ago was considered a myth. The fact that you two bonded that way was a miracle, the fact that our bond is manifesting that way is downright mystical,” Dimitri said, his voice gruff.
“Are we getting to the ‘but’?” Pixie said. I bit back a smirk.
“This type of bonding is said to come from pure magick. To even have this type of bonding shouldn’t happen to us. Unless one of us is…” Luca looked nervous then, looking around the room as if he was being watched. I frowned.
“One of us is…” I prompted.
“It’s really silly but one of us will have to be a direct descendant of someone who is pure magick. But those beings do not really exist,” he finished.
Dante rubbed the back of his neck and muttered, “Clearly.”
“I’m interested in how you guys know all of this,” Pixie inquired.
Etienne paced. “As you reach certain levels in your training, we are let into certain archives. Let’s just say, these beings more than exist, our Council was having clandestine meetings years ago. According to something we were able to snag from the forbidden archives.”
“Forbidden?” I inquired.
“Just that. Forbidden. We never did find those papers again and we knew better than to ask. The point is, if the Council even suspected someone here was a direct descendent in anyway”—Etienne looked right into my eyes for a second—“we wouldn’t be alive long enough to even whisper a goodbye.”
We took a deep intake of breath and the room felt heavy with questions, fear, and something else. Something that I was too scared to put a label on, but my magick knew it already.
“That's not the end. Our bonding would not only be a melding of souls, but also a melding of magick, minds and skill sets. It is, according to those archives, so strong that those who bond this way are an unstoppable force. Just like those entities they reference. Even more so, the love they share is completely irrevocable. A love that is so bone deep that we are all perfectly aligned and our souls are truly one,” Luca said gently. The look of longing was clear on their faces. I knew in my heart we could never deny them the chance. We may have just met physically but our souls have been dancing with destiny for a long time.
“We want that,” Dimitri finished.
“Okay, so now can we touch the ‘but’?” Pixie said huskily, as she was completely transfixed by Luca when he was speaking. I, on the other hand, was eye-fucking the shit out of my vampire.
I tore my eyes away from temptation and laughed. “Nice Nemo Reference!”
Dimitri beat Dante to it. “We want to extend the invitations for the recruitment, but logically we cannot walk in shooting purple sparks around all Willy Nilly and expect for people to not freak out, so we would need to accept the bond. Tonight.”
“You all want to have sex tonight?” I asked. I mean Pixie and I bonded without sex since we met so young but it was the moment we came together, see what I did there, that sparks finally stopped happening.
Dante and Luca looked like they were about to choke, and Dimitri and Etienne smirked.
“No, there is no need for sex, not right now at least, we can complete the bond through touch,” Luca said.
“No offense, Luca, but the first time me and Ellie had sex was when our sparks went away, so we are just a little confused here,” Pixie said just what I was thinking.
He sighed. “Listen, in theory, sex works to solidify the bond, like snapping a rubber band in place. What I’m proposing is more like a Band-Aid, we would hold hands…”
I couldn’t help it. I barked a laugh, and had to interrupt, “Like pre-coitus kumbaya?”
Pixie and I fell back on the bed laughing, breaking the tense moment in the room. Luca looked peeved so I tried to sober up to let him continue. “I’m sorry camp guru, continue.”
“As I was saying we would hold hands, drop our mental barriers and let our minds become one,” Luca finished.
I spoke up, “Logically speaking,” and they all groaned. “This idea of purple sparks hasn’t been around for hundreds of years, so I don’t think I’ll trust a kumbaya moment, when I know for a fact what worked for Pixie and I, also keep in mind—our minds touched—when sparks hit us in the workout room and we heard each other’s thoughts, and yet here we still are, thunder barneys.”
“So what are you saying?” Dimitri asked thickly.
Pixie piped in, “Everyone, drop your mental shields and connect. Breathe and focus on the emotions, sensations, and the wants and needs of others in the room.”
“What I’m saying is,” I continued as me and Pixie got off the bed at the same time and snapped off our bras. “We start”—we slide off our panties—“you watch.”
Then I whispered in everyone’s mind,Then you join, when I tell you to.
