As far as I know, it’s the only selfless thing she’s ever done.

She’s going to raise hell when she finds out Thiago exiled me.

The only comforting thought that gives me is that maybe she’ll find a way to free Kari in the process. I don’t need my mother to help me. But I’d find a way to be grateful if she helped my friend.

The SUV brakes, and the momentum sends me shooting forward hard enough to snap me out of my own musings.

“This is it, kid.”

The driver pulls over onto the gravel shoulder, and I glance around. We’re in the middle of nowhere. Not that I expected anything less. I have no money. No phone. No car. And no chance of getting his help with any of those things if his expression is any clue.

Great.

When I don’t move fast enough for his liking, the driver turns in his seat and pins me with a nasty look. “Did you hear me, girl? I said get out. Now.”

“I’m going,” I mutter.

“One more thing,” he adds. “Anything happens to Thiago, and we all have orders to eliminate Kari.”

I stare back at him, incredulous.

Sure, the threat is Thiago’s style, but the fact that this asshole would follow through is asinine.

“She’s next in line,” I remind him, but he only shrugs.

“I take my orders from the alpha.”

Our stare-down only lasts a moment before he’s waving me out again. “Now get going,” he snaps.

Arguing is pointless.

I open my door and climb out, sliding off the buttery leather until my boots hit the gravel. The door barely clicks shut behind me before the asshole hits the gas. He pulls a U-turn, kicking up gravel in his wake, then accelerates back onto the highway in a cloud of dust.

I put up an arm to shield my face from the rocks and dust.

When he’s gone, I lower it and stare at the retreating taillights until they vanish into the distance.

Then, I’m alone.

The wind stirs the ends of my tangled hair, and I’m struck by just how long it’s been since I showered.

The scent coming off me is…ripe.

It takes me a long moment to realize the fact that I can smell myself so clearly is significant.

Finally!

My wolf is back.

She returns slowly, stirring lazily against what remains of the wolfsbane. While my blood burns through the last of it, I start walking, urging my wolf to fully wake. In the meantime, I plan my next move.

Somewhere out there is a killer. And whether I like it or not, I have to find him and bring him back to Thiago.

Levi was something to me once. But then, he betrayed me and became nothing. After that, I swore I’d never have anything to do with him again.

Unfortunately, in a pack like mine, promises are made to be broken.

It’s Levi for Kari.
