I don’t have a chance to ask before he launches himself at me. The force of his heavier body knocks me down, and I don’t have a chance to wriggle away before he’s pinned me.
His massive paw slashes down my shoulder, ripping me open. It’s a narrow gash that burns instantly, and I renew my desperate struggle to free myself enough to roll away.
He doesn’t budge, and when he pulls back again, I can see myself reflected in his glowing eyes.
This is it then.
Exiled only to be hunted down and murdered.
I bare my teeth, determined to go out with an attitude, and brace myself for the final blow.
But it’s a blow that never comes. Not for me, at least.
Instead, my attacker is shoved off me as another wolf slams into him.
I jump to my paws and get ready to finish the tracker off, but there’s no need. His grunt turns to a sharp yelp and then falls abruptly silent.
I peer into the shadows until I see him.
The tracker lies on his side, half-buried in a pile of leaves. His throat is ripped open, and his eyes are lifeless, aimed at the wolf who just took him out like it was nothing.
I look from my would-be killer to the wolf who just saved me, and the recognition slams into me.
Levi.
He looks back at me through too-large wolf eyes, and the breath is sucked from my lungs. On two legs, he’s a human-like god. On four, it’s all I can do to keep my wolf from rolling right over onto her back and showing him the goods.
She’s all his, and he knows it.
I hate him. And her.
I hate this.
Mates.
It’s stupid and archaic and a relentless wanting that burns in my stomach.
Levi stares at me so long that I eventually look away.
The moment I do, I know that’s what he was waiting for. My submission breaks the spell, and he saunters off. The idea that he’s going to walk away like this was no big deal sparks my temper.
I don’t think about it, I just shift back and march after him in the murky darkness.
“Hey,” I call out sharply.
He doesn’t stop.
“Hey!”
Finally, he turns back.
When he sees me standing before him, he shifts too. I realize way too late what a horrible idea it was to provoke him because my gaze is instantly drawn to his chiseled abs and the perfect “V” that points like an arrow on a treasure map to what he has to offer.
Fuck me…
Literally.
Levi clears his throat, and when my eyes whip back to his, he’s watching me with an arched brow. I bite my lip, terrified I said that last part out loud.
