“Mac,” he prompts, sounding smug.
I inhale sharply, not sure when my body stopped doing that without being told. And I’m just about to demand all sorts of answers to important, non-sexual questions, but then his eyes lock onto something on my neck, and he marches closer.
“What the hell,” he growls. “You’re hurt.”
He reaches for me, and the moment his fingers brush my skin, I flinch and step back. He drops his hand like he’s been burned. Our eyes lock.
“You’re bleeding.”
His voice is gentle. Kind.
My eyes burn with hot tears. Grief.
Because I know he’s not gentle or kind. But dammit, I wish he were.
When I don’t answer, he reaches for me again.
I wrench away and step back, crossing my arms in an attempt to cover up.
“You saved me,” I say like it’s an accusation.
“Let me guess. You had him.”
I narrow my eyes at his sarcastic tone.
“Why?” I demand.
“Why what?”
“Why bother to save my life when I’m the only witness to the fact that you killed our alpha?”
Levi’s expression tightens. Even in the darkness, I can see the familiar lines that appear at the corners of his eyes and the way his mouth turns down into a subtle frown.
“I don’t want you to die, Mac.”
The words are soft, almost like he means them.
“I don’t believe you.”
He stares back at me, eyes glinting. “Did it even occur to you that maybe I didn’t kill Crigger?”
“Why are you following me?” I ask, refusing to answer his question. Or even consider it, really. An innocent Levi presents all sorts of problems, starting with the fact that we’re standing this close without a shred of clothes between us.
My nipples harden in response.
Lie.
They’ve been pebbled since the moment he looked at me.
“I think the response you’re looking for is ‘thank you.’”
His answering smirk snaps my control, and I slam my fist into his stomach. He grunts, doubling over and backing away. Probably smart. I cross my arms, content to watch him struggle.
“Thank you,” I say sweetly.
He straightens and glares up at me. “Next time, I’ll let him rip your throat out.”
I flash him a winning smile—and then promptly pass out.
