Who the fuck is Jade?

An image of a faceless woman flashes in my mind. Jealousy stabs through me, and I duck my head to hide my feelings. Levi’s personal life is his own. He made that clear. Unfortunately, my wolf didn’t get the memo. Neither did my heart.

“You owe me for this, man,” Tripp tells him.

He snorts, glancing back at me one last time. “Oh, I’m already paying, believe me.”

Levi’s out the door and pulling it closed behind him just as I fling the bedside Bible at the back of his head.

ChapterSeven

While we wait for my body to burn off the venom, Tripp doesn’t let me out of his sight other than to shower and pee. Even then, he’s at the door when I emerge. Clearly guarding against any attempted escape. But Levi was right. I’m weak. Too weak to make a run for it, at least for now.

“You hungry?” Tripp asks from where he’s pulled a chair to the foot of the bed. He leans back, propping his feet on the wall so he can tip himself onto the back legs.

I don’t miss the fact that he’s blocking the exit.

“I could eat,” I say grudgingly.

Tripp isn’t bad as nursemaids go. The truth is I’m a shitty patient. Not that I’d ever admit it. For the last two hours, I’ve given him the silent treatment, but my stomach will no longer allow it. My insides are cramped with hunger.

Tripp orders food and then returns his attention to the episode of HGTV. It’s the latest in a marathon, and I’m nearing my limit on how many times I can listen to these people complain about what they deem a “design flaw” in a house none of them had to pay for. If I have to watch one more housewife bitch about her first-world problems of a too-small dining room table, I’m going to let the poison take me.

“So, you work for Levi now?”

No answer. Tripp’s trying to wait me out. Fine. But I’m way more stubborn than he is.

“Never figured you for much of a foot soldier,” I add, knowing full well it’s going to trigger my former friend way too hard to not ignore me.

But he merely cuts me a knowing glance. “That’s the best you’ve got?”

“What are you talking about?”

“When you’re bored, you pick fights. I haven’t forgotten who you are, Mac.”

I look away, cracking my neck side to side like I’m unaffected.

“Why are you so hell-bent on bringing him in, anyway?” Tripp asks.

I cut him a look because now I’m the one triggered. “He didn’t tell you? Thiago’s on a power trip.”

He snorts. “When is he not?”

My eyes narrow. “This time, he’s clearing the board of anyone who might threaten his newfound power. He’s holding Kari hostage until I get back with someone he can make an example of for Crigger’s death.”

“Shit.” All pretense vanishes from Tripp’s expression. He looks shocked but not for long. Finally, he shakes his head. “I’m sorry, Mac. That’s gotta be hard.”

“I can’t abandon her.”

“Of course not. I would never suggest it.”

“Levi did.”

He looks away, his expression clouded with secrets.

“What aren’t you telling me, Tripp?”

He sighs. “That’s an explanation we don’t even have time for.”
