His expression tightens. “If I untie you, will you run?”

“Of course not.” I snort, and he relaxes. “I’ll kick your ass, kill you, then I’ll run, dragging your dead body along behind me to deliver to Thiago.”

He shakes his head. “You still think he’ll let Kari go if you bring me in.”

He doesn’t say it like a question.

More like I’m the idiot if I say yes.

Seething, I refuse to answer at all.

“He’s using you, Mac. All he cares about is power. He has a little taste of it now. And he knows he has to eliminate the rest of his family to keep it.”

“You’ll say anything to save your own ass. You’ve already made it clear you don’t care about Kari. Or me.”

The tic in his jaw lets me know I’ve pushed him too far. He stands with enough force to send the chair toppling behind him. Then he closes the distance, grabbing the back of my chair and leaning down so that we’re eye to eye.

“You have no idea who or what I care about. I’ve tried to tell you, but it’s like you don’t hear me. What the hell do I have to do to convince you?”

It’s like my eyeballs detach from my brain. I drop my gaze to his mouth—just for an instant, but it’s more than enough. Levi lets out a growl, and I gasp as his mouth crashes against my own.

My arms strain against the bindings. All I want is to get closer. Logically, I know I should use this opportunity to knee him in the dick, but the only thing I want to touch his cock with right now is my hand or my mouth. I arch into him, pressing my breasts against his chest. Scraping my nipples across the fabric of his shirt.

The friction is delicious. But I want more.

His tongue sweeps into my mouth, plundering.

Levi is taking exactly what he wants, and I can’t bring myself to resist—because it’s what I want too.

My teeth snag his bottom lip, biting down softly, and he groans.

I whimper, desperate for whatever he’ll give me, and his body stiffens.

Instead of deepening the kiss, he pulls back. His chest heaves with labored breaths. The look in his eyes is pure, primal hunger.

I look back at him, uncaring that I’ve let my guard all the way down. He already has my heart at his beck and call; why not take my body too?

Whatever he sees in my eyes, it’s not enough though.

He inches back a little more and exhales heavily.

“Focus on this moment, right here,” he whispers, desperation replacing desire. “If you don’t believe my words, believe this,” he adds, his gaze dropping to my lips then flicking up again to search my glazed eyes. “I will protect you until the day I die, even if it means protecting you from yourself.”

My temper stirs.

Desire cools.

This asshole just kissed me to prove a point.

Fine, two can play at that game.

I go with Plan B, driving my knee up and into his groin.

It doesn’t quite pack the force I’m capable of, thanks to the bindings trapping my ankles, but it’s enough. He doubles over but, unfortunately, recovers quickly. When he straightens, his glare is unyielding.

“If you don’t believe my words, believe this,” I say, throwing his words back into his face. “I hate you so much more than you seem to hate yourself.”

His nostrils flare. “You’re stubborn as fucking hell, you know that?”
