Not a single soul on this planet is fighting for her besides me. I have to stay focused. And that means I can’t afford to kick Levi’s dick into his stomach. Not yet.

When I open the door again, Levi’s waiting.

“Here.” He shoves a bottle of water at me.

The seal hasn’t been cracked yet, so I take it and twist it open, drinking until I can’t breathe and nearly choke on it. The liquid is sweet relief to my parched throat, but I pace myself. It’ll do me no good to throw it up again.

Levi’s security guy returns. Burnett. He holds out a protein bar. “Sorry, kitchen’s closed, this is all I can find.”

Levi frowns and starts to object but, I snatch it away. “It’s perfect.”

And still sealed.

I peel the wrapper back and break off a huge bite.

“Why wasn’t she fed?” Levi demands.

“Grey was in charge of it,” Burnett says with a shrug.

“Tell him to meet me after his shift,” Levi snaps.

“You got it.”

Burnett walks out, and we’re left alone again.

I stand there and scarf down the entire bar then finish off the water without breaking our silence. By the time I’m done, I am mildly convinced I can walk unassisted. My feet and legs are tingling with the feeling of blood returning. My hands work well enough.

Still, Levi actually looks … sorry. Or something close to it.

“How long have I been in there?” I ask.

He hesitates. “Two days, give or take.”

Two days.

Damn.

No wonder I’m coming apart at the seams. My mother trained me for all manner of fighting—offense, defense, and everything in between. But I’ve never trained for a scenario like this one. Capture. Torture. And the fact that Levi’s my captor… I have no idea what to do or say next.

But he’s watching me like it’s my move.

“What’s the matter with you?” I ask.

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. You’re being…weird. Apologizing, bringing me water, food.”

He chuckles darkly. “You mean nice?”

“You kidnapped me and kept me in a locked room for two days without food or water. Let’s not get carried away.”

He sighs. “Look, I had to do something drastic to—”

“Don’t say you’re keeping me safe.”

“All right.” He gestures to the door Burnett left through, and, I suspect, whatever lies beyond. “I’m also protecting the people in this community.”

I glance around what looks like a fallout shelter. “What community?”
