“Levi, brother, I hope you’re well.”

The smugness in Thiago’s voice infuriates me, but I force myself to keep quiet and listen.

“You may have heard I’ve struck a deal with your little Reject. Quinn is on the hunt for a killer, and I’ve taken my sister as leverage until she brings me one. The people want justice for my father’s murder, and I intend to get it for them. In the meantime, please warn the little Quinn that should any harm come to me, I’ve left instructions that Kari should meet that same fate.”

There’s a blood-curdling scream that abruptly cuts off.

Thiago chuckles darkly, but I barely register the sound. My own heart has dropped to my stomach.

I look up at Levi.

He’s already watching me.

“Sounds a bit like our previous arrangement, eh?” Thiago adds, clearly amused with himself. “In case there’s any confusion, that deal also still stands.”

Click.

The call ends.

My heart pounds.

“What deal?” I ask.

Levi doesn’t answer.

“What deal?” I repeat, louder now.

“You didn’t tell her.” Jadick’s tone is surprised.

I spare a glance for Tripp, who keeps his eyes on the table.

Every one of them knows something I don’t.

“I will tear this compound apart, and then I’ll run back to Thiago and sell all of you out if you don’t tell me about this deal right the fuck now,” I growl.

“Everyone out,” Levi says.

His voice is barely above a whisper, but it’s deadly.

Tripp and Jadick exchange a glance and then get up from their chairs.

“Don’t be too hard on him, Mac,” Jadick says.

Levi looks ready to punch him.

“Not now,” Levi says in a tight voice.

I catch a twinkle of satisfaction in Jadick’s eye, but then he ducks his head and walks out behind Tripp.

When we’re alone, I push out of my chair and stand against the far wall. It’s stupid, really. There’s nowhere I can go Levi can’t reach me. His hooks are in too deep.

He looks up at me, and the connection between us pulls taut.

“Thiago came to me three years ago,” he says, voice devoid of emotion. “He knew what you and I planned to do… accepting one another as mates. Proclaiming ourselves as Romantics. He threatened you. He said— He said he’d kill you if I didn’t reject you.”

“You’re serious?”

“I would never lie about this, Mac.”
