Exiting the building knowing I can’t drive home right now, I make my way down the street to the hotel I stopped by earlier. Up another elevator and finally through my door, in the privacy of my own room, the tears come.
Every single muscle in my body aches as my body shakes uncontrollably. My knees give out first, causing me to fall onto the floor. As the screams of agony pour from my throat, I slowly pull my knees to my chest.
My heart has shattered. Busted to smithereens. The ache in my chest is so severe I feel as if someone reached their hand inside my chest, grabbed my heart, and started squeezing it with all their might.
The river of tears falling down my face blurs the world around me. My throat feels raw while my body continues to spasm.
Is this what death feels like?
No, I’m not dying, but this feels like a close second. Death would be kinder than this.
I fish my phone out of my purse, which I must have dropped when I fell to the floor. It takes a couple of tries to see the buttons well enough, but soon enough I hit the Call button.
“Hello?” comes across the line.
“I. Need. You,” I choke out.
“I’m on my way.”
???
I slowly come to when I feel as if I’m floating.
“Shh, calm down, V. It’s me,” Keaton murmur.
“Keat? What are you doing here?”
Why does my head feel like a jackhammer went to town on it?
“You called us, silly.” Sage’s warm voice floats to me. “Lay her on the bed.”
“How did you know where I was? How did you get in here?”
“You called, babe. Don’t you remember?” Sage asks me with worry in her eyes while she lies down next to me.
“I did?” I ask. Keaton tries to move from under me, but I hold tight. “Please,” I beg, closing my eyes, unable to look at either of them.
“Always, V. You know that,” he whispers as he lies down on the bed behind me, holding me tight. My back to his front, and Sage and I chest to chest.
“What happened?” Sage asks, softly pushing the hair off my face.
“I’m pregnant,” I whisper before the tears start flowing.
I feel Keaton go taut behind me before mumbling, “Fuck,” under his breath.
Sage squeezes my hand three times. “Okay, we can do this. It’s okay.”
“We got you, V. We got you.” Keaton holds me tight against him while I sob.
“I’ll be right back.” Sage begins to move.
My eyes spring open, and I reach for her as she tries to get off the bed while staring at Keaton.
“Please, don’t go. Don’t leave me. I need you,” I beg between sobs.
“We’ll figure this out.” She crawls back next to me.
I don’t know how long we lie there together. It could’ve been an hour, or it could have been days. Finally, I calm myself down before pulling out of their hold.
