Wait, what?
Fuck. Why do I care?
I pace for a minute before returning to the living room.
“Ready already?”
“Um, no. Can I borrow your phone? Also, do you have Hailee’s phone number?”
“Sure.”
He pulls out his phone, pressing a couple of buttons before handing it over. I don’t miss the way his hand lingers on mine.
“Just press the green button and it will call her.”
“Thanks.”
I run back to the room, closing the door as I press the button.
“Hello?” Her voice comes over the phone.
“Hailee, I need your help.”
“What’s wrong?” she asks, full of concern.
“I’m going somewhere with Chase and I don’t know what to wear.”
“Oh, a date! How exciting.”
“It’s not a date. I just….”
“You want to look good. Is it for him?”
“Not for him per se. I don’t want to embarrass him.”
“Sure. Where are you going?”
“I don’t know. He didn’t tell me.” I chew on my lip.
“Hmm.” She hums. “He doesn’t seem too fancy so we can rule out needing something formal. You have those dark pairs of jeans. Wear those.”
“Okay.” I move to my bag and pull them out. “Got them. What else?”
“Let me think. You still have that long-sleeved burgundy shirt, right?”
I pull it out and stare at it. “Yeah.”
“Good. Wear that.”
“It’s a little tight on me. I’ve had it for years,” I mumble, frowning at the top.
“It looks great on you. It hugs you in all the right areas. It’s plain so it can be casual, but if he takes you somewhere nicer, it can also be dressed up. You will look hot.”
“Who said I wanted to look hot?”
“Don’t lie to me. I know why you called me instead of wearing whatever you wanted.”
“I’m hanging up now.”
