I think back to her tense demeanor when I was on the phone. Is she going for me?
I’m still mulling this over when Conor taps on my door.
“The plane is ready when you are.”
I nod. The fundraiser is tomorrow, but I have plans to surprise my niece with my arrival. I don’t get back to see her much, but I try my best.
She’s not my real niece. Not by blood, anyway. Her father saved my life once, making him a brother to me. When it came time to pick a leader in Chicago, I had no qualms about offering him up as a candidate. Then he had his baby girl and asked me to be her godfather. I was honored and accepted without a second thought.
That was then. Now, our relationship is strained. As he continued to gain power, he changed. Became something I can no longer respect.
That’s why I wanted to go for Cleo. She will need an ally. As she grew into a young woman, she became feisty and independent. She wants to choose her own future, but her father will never allow it.
Much like Greer.
If I feel it necessary, I will step in.
Walking out of my office, I meet Conor downstairs. He won’t be coming with me on this trip. I’m leaving him here to handle business in my absence.
For a moment, I wonder if he would be like Shane. If he would let the greed and power change him.
“Call me if you need anything,” I tell him.
“Of course, boss.” He nods.
I grab my keys from him. The car already pulled around to the front of the drive.
“Callum will meet you at the airstrip. Have a safe flight.” Conor’s face remains stoic.
I don’t respond, instead heading down the front steps to the car.
The entire ride to the private airstrip, I debate with myself. One part of me wants to call and offer Greer a ride on my jet. The thought of taking her to the back bedroom, giving her a ticket to the mile-high club will keep me uncomfortably hard the entire ride.
The other part wants to see how this plays out. She didn’t mention Chicago to me. I didn’t mention it to her either, but I know she heard my call with Shane. If I were to make assumptions, I would think she is going because she heard I was going. She doesn’t know why I’m going, but that doesn’t matter. She’s as obsessed with me as I am with her. I’d be a fool to think I know what’s in her head though. Greer is the most unpredictable woman I know.
No, I won’t offer her a ride. I’ll let her make her own way there.
What were you thinking?
That’s all that keeps running through my head as I get ready for what I’m sure will be a long night. Especially if I find Killian with another woman.
I’ll never be able to forgive him.
Why am I like this?
I never planned to feel this way. If anything, I avoided it at all costs.
Following a man across the country because of jealousy? That wasn’t me. That’s not who I wanted to be.
Yet still, I stand here in front of the full-length mirror in a gorgeous ball gown that was delivered to me earlier this evening.
I pick up the note that came with it.
Saw this and thought of you. Wear it tonight...

How he knew I was here, I don’t know, but I’m not surprised. The man takes great pleasure in showing me he can be anywhere at any time.
