Jonathan didn't respond. He knew what his tasks were. He wanted to find Aldridge more than anyone else.
His sister had been taken almost a year earlier. He'd been doing all he could to track her down, but he could only narrow it down to Aldridge's organization.
With any luck, we could nail down more information on his organization.
A wicked smile spread over my face.
Something told me that Aldridge was a talker. He'd become well acquainted with my knives and would sing his truth soon enough.
CHAPTER53
Noah
Lucas and James sat at the dining room table, each with a cup of coffee that had barely been touched in front of them.
As soon as I read Xavier's text, I'd woken them. Few words had been exchanged since.
That was three hours ago.
I paced along the length of the kitchen, barely resisting the urge to rip my hair out of my head. What was Bridget thinking going off alone? Did she not trust us? Love us enough to confide in us?
The thoughts were spinning out of control, and my self-doubts flared to life and grew louder as time passed.
A fist slamming down on the table drew me out of my spiraling thoughts.
Lucas rose, his jaw set in a determined line. "This is bullshit. We all need to get out of our heads. Bridget did this for one reason and one reason only. To protect everyone, including the taken omegas. She didn't abandon us. She didn't leave us on purpose. She threw herself on the grenade to save all of us."
Fuck. Lucas was right. It was exactly what was in the back of my head, but the doubts had silenced it.
Bridget was a selfless omega. She'd do anything to protect those she loved, including sacrificing herself.
"Then we need to get our heads out of our asses and get there to help her." James nodded in agreement.
"Elias was working on getting travel arranged as soon as possible." I stopped pacing, but my foot continued to tap out a frantic rhythm, betraying my frayed nerves.
Speak of the devil...
A knock sounded on the door, and Elias and Simon swept in. Simon looked as if he'd been sucking on lemons, his face was so puckered. Elias was calm if a bit on edge.
"We're leaving in thirty minutes," Elias said without preamble, then checked his watch. "They should be landing shortly, and Xavier will keep us updated. Can you three keep to the plan and not reach out to her?"
Even though every fiber of my being was telling me to call her and ask her what the fuck she was thinking—after I told her how much I loved her, of course—but I would keep my cool so we could accomplish the ultimate goal of taking down Aldridge and keeping Bridget safe. Preferably, with the only bloodshed being that of Aldridge and his goons.
"Yeah." I nodded as my gaze swept over James, then Lucas. "I think we can do that. We don't want anything to happen to her."
"None of us do." Simon's eyes shut, and he bit out a curse. "I can't believe she'd be that impulsive to go off like that."
"Really?" Lucas asked incredulously. "Cause I can. She's selfless. Honestly, I'm pissed at myself for not figuring out she'd do something like this.”
"Me too," I replied, running my fingers through my hair. "I just wish she would have talked to us about it."
James snorted. "She knew we'd do whatever was needed to keep her safe, including keeping her here and far away from her brother. We owe Xavier for going with her and keeping his eye on her."
"I wouldn't go that far," I bit out through clenched teeth. "He could have given us a heads up sooner instead of when they were already halfway to Chicago."
Lucas reached back and wrapped a hand around my wrist. "Calm down, Noah. You know she would have just found another way to go if we had stopped her today."
Simon sighed. "He's right. She's notoriously stubborn."
