He patted my shoulder before leaving.
I let out a breath as he closed the door behind him. Why did I have to be so awkward?
Shaking my head at myself, I went over to the tray of food and picked up the sandwich that was there. Stacked high with slices of ham, turkey, cheese and bacon, it had just the right amount of mayo and the bread was among the softest I’d ever eaten. It was utter perfection and just enough for my empty stomach.
CHAPTER2
Lucas
As soon as I closed the cabin door behind me, I looked up to the sky and silently thanked the Big Guy. He’d brought us a wonderful gift in the form of a curvy omega. If I were an alpha, her scent would have imprinted on me almost immediately. Even as a beta, I knew her perfume was the perfect combination for my pack. Noah would flip when he met her.
I knew Simon had said to leave her be for the night–a command Noah reiterated–but I couldn’t let someone under my care go hungry. Especially after learning they hadn’t really eaten anything since earlier in the day.
I placed a hand on the door as if trying to communicate to the shy Bridget. She was scared, that much was obvious. Despite being free for a number of years, she was wary of strangers. Which, she had every right to be.
I hated Society with a passion. Omegas weren’t treated as human, they were treated like objects to be owned, bartered, or sold. Even where I’d grown up on the fringes of proper Society, omegas had to have a guardian to be able to do anything.
There were social norms, which were more like laws. If you didn’t conform to their constructs, you were banished.
Like I had been.
Bridget being here was bringing up all sorts of memories for each of us. But it wasn’t the time nor the place to be dwelling on such things.
When Simon had called us and asked us for this favor, we didn’t hesitate. It wasn’t just because we needed the help—although we desperately did—we did it because our friends asked.
Plus, Noah was a huge softy. It was the thing I loved about him the most. One of many things. His generous spirit was one reason why Second Chance had struggled from time to time. He did too much for not enough money.
With the cost of repairs and upkeep, I wondered how we could keep going on. Noah handled all of the finances, and lately there had been more strain when it came to the business side of things. Not that he shared much of anything about it with us.
I would never let anything happen to Second Chance while I was alive. I’d find a way to save this place, if it came down to it. It was too special to me to not be a permanent spot in my life.
I’d do anything to keep it open, even if it meant accepting money from Elias and his pack. Noah flat out refused to take what he deemed as charity from anyone. But if it came down to it, I knew James and I would force the issue.
Walking back to the house, I kept looking over my shoulder, hoping for a glance of the shy omega. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side tonight.
As I went inside, James was in the living room, sipping from a glass of whiskey. He nodded at me, no word needing to be said as the air heated between us. Noah was in the kitchen helping to clean up. I wrapped my arms around his middle from behind.
“You deliver the food?” Noah kept washing the dishes with a smile in his voice. Of course he knew that I would bring her some food, despite being told not to.
Yeah, I was kind of a brat.
He knew me all too well. I smiled against his back, savoring the strong scent of pine and cedar that made my cock stir every time I inhaled it.
“Yeah. She’s awfully skittish, but fucking beautiful. Perfect, actually.” I could hear the wistful tone in my voice as I spoke of the omega that I knew would be ours.
Noah turned in my arms, wrapping his around my back as he looked down at me. “Oh?” His expression was curious. “It doesn’t surprise me that she’s skittish after the story that Simon told.”
I squeezed his middle, tipping my face up. “I think you’ll like her.” Iknowhe’ll like her.
His lips curved at my invite, and he leaned forward, pressing his lips to mine slowly, deeply. I sighed into the kiss, opening my mouth to his, letting our tongues dance in tandem.
Kissing him always overloaded my senses.
I could feel his purr against my chest as we separated for air.
“Mmm. You always taste so good.” Noah rumbled softly, rubbing his beard along my neck. I wriggled at the feel of the scruff, laughing as I pushed back.
James came in, smiling softly. “What’s this?”
