“We were just talking about our new help. Bridget is adorable.”And ours,I wanted to say, but out of the three of us, it would take James the longest to warm up to the idea of an omega.

James shook his head and put his empty glass in the sink before turning and crossing his arms across his chest. “You didn’t spook her, did you?”

I scoffed at him. “I would never scare her!” I shook a finger at him. “I’m not you.”

He shrugged at the accusation. “Simon said that she was stressed and overwhelmed.”

She’d seemed that way when I dropped the food off, but she’d also been nice and adorable. She was a little awkward, but who wasn’t when thrown into a new situation in a new place?

There was just something about her. The softness of her eyes, how expressive they were despite how she was holding back. She was guarding herself; that was a given, but I knew with time we could break down those walls guarding her heart.

“She’ll need a gentle hand.” I shrugged. “But she seems eager to be here.”

Now, I needed to find a way to get her to the main house and have Noah scent her. As the alpha, he’d be the only one who would grow addicted to her scent. James and I had to like it, of course, but as the only one who’d be able to knot her, Noah held a lot of the cards in our pack.

Not that he ever took advantage of it. James and I knew if we disapproved of an omega, it didn’t matter how he felt, he would walk away.

Noah plucked the hat off my head and smiled warmly. “You know there are no hats in the house.” Those fine lines around his eyes grew deeper each day that he shouldered the burden of our pack and the ranch.

I grasped his hand. “Let’s go to bed. You’ve worried enough for the day. Let your betas take care of you.”

His eyes fluttered shut as he let out a deep exhale. “That sounds like the best idea of the day.”

James fell into step behind me as I drew Noah down the hall.

Soon, we’d have Bridget as our omega, and everything would be perfect.

CHAPTER3

Bridget

The following day, I took a shower before getting dressed. I was braiding my hair when someone knocked on the door.

“Come in.” I didn’t leave the bathroom as I finished my hair. Probably shouldn’t have told whoever it was to come in, but it was either going to be Simon, Alena, or one of my new bosses. It was just a natural reflex to say, ‘come in.’

I still had to get used to other people and my new home.

Anticipation coiled in my belly, and I fought the urge to start tapping my foot. I’d thought about Lucas, the handsome and kind beta, all night. Simon hadn’t told me much about my bosses, other than Noah was the alpha, and James and Lucas were betas.

There was a part of me that wanted to meet them straight away.

And it scared me. I never had that urge with anyone else before. I was content to stay in the shadows and not meet anyone new. Perfectly secure with my work-from-home job as a forensic accountant.

Now, I had to quit my last contract before it was completed because the Society hounds had found me. Luckily, I also did a bit of website design so I could easily grab a few jobs to earn money while I was here. I would not rely upon Simon to pay my way while I was here.

“Bridget?” Simon walked in with yet another tray of food. There was the smell of coffee that made my taste buds sing. “How was your night?”

I finished tying off my braid and walked into the main room of the cabin. Simon set the tray on the small table and sat on one of the chairs near the window. His scent of fresh sea air was familiar.

“It was relaxing. Lucas came by with some food for dinner. Well, I guess it was more like a midnight snack.” I sat across from my friend. “He seems very…excitable.”

Simon started to pour the coffee into two mugs with a chuckle. “‘Excitable’ is an accurate description. But he’s a good man. All of them are. I wouldn’t have brought you here if they weren’t.” He passed one of the mugs to me, and I poured cream and sugar into it.

I let out a sigh, staring down into my cup, then asked the question that had haunted me since last night.. “He’s one of my bosses, isn’t he?”

Simon drank his coffee black as he nodded. “He is. They’re all very kind, Bridget. They’ll respect you.”

I stared back down into the coffee, then inhaled the sharp smell. “Will they, though? Once they learn that I’m neurodivergent, they’ll treat me differently.” Everyone always does. But Lucas hadn’t treated me any differently last night. Yeah, he didn’t know, but I’d felt how genuine he was.
