"Lucas, sweetie." Alena soothed. Her voice really did help calm me since Bridget wasn't here. "It's okay. Her body almost fell into a full heat, and you stopped it. It can be tough on the body. So, yes, it's fine if she's still sleeping. Talk to me, boo, what else happened?"

I ran a shaking hand through my hair. "My hands wouldn't stop shaking. I couldn't give her the shot because of it. Noah came in. He had smelled her heat, and he administered it."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

I shook my head. "That's what Noah and James said, but I feel useless." Tears burned the back of my eyes, and my throat swelled closed.

"You are still a treasured pack member, Lucas." Her voice was even. Her tone was soothing and kept me from completely breaking down. "I know Bridget and the guys would say the same. I'm sure the guys already have if you've voiced this concern to them."

"Kinda?" Ugh. She was right. If I mentioned my misgivings to Noah and James, and even Bridget, they'd tell me just how stupid I was being.

"You've had a lot of changes in your life over the past few weeks. It's normal not to like change." Alena was able to get right to the heart of the matter. Gods, I loved her warm spirit. She was like the sister I never had.

"You're so right. Thank you, Alena."

Somehow, just saying my insecurities out loud helped combat them.

"Of course I am." She giggled, the sound making a small smile spread over my face. "Now, finish whatever you're cooking and go upstairs and cuddle with your omega. Besties orders."

"Thank you," I repeated, the weight falling off my shoulders and freeing me. "I knew I called the right person."

"Gotcha, boo. Now shoo." She laughed again. "Ha, I made a rhyme. Love ya. I'll call Bridget tomorrow when she's feeling better and let y'all know when we're coming."

"Bye."

We hung up, and I squared my shoulders. I knew what I had to do, and I'd focus on the positive and help Bridget however I could.

I grabbed one of the fresh chocolate chip cookies and put it on a plate.

Wait, I should take a few.

I grabbed five more before turning away and marching up the stairs.

Everything was better with cookies.

CHAPTER33

Bridget

My nose tickled as something sweet penetrated through the haze of sleep. The bed dipped, and arms wrapped around me from behind. The scent of freshly baked cookies intensified, and a smile curled my lips.

Lucas.

With a contented sigh, I wiggled back against him and twined our fingers together.

"Are you alright?" Lucas asked, his voice wary and nervous.

Lucas was always eager, and tentative. He was no-nonsense and straight to the point. Confident to the nth degree.

I released his hand and turned over to face him. I winced as my sore muscles protested the movement. "I'm fine, just tired and sore. What's wrong with you?"

He blinked at me, his bright teal eyes shining with something I couldn't quite pinpoint. "Why do you ask that?"

My hands splayed out over his chest. "You look so sad, Lucas. There's something that's bothering you."

"Nope." He shook his head, forcing on a fake smile.

A stab of hurt pierced through my chest, and I dropped my gaze. He must have been disappointed in me for choosing not to go into heat.
