As I continued to look at Sawyer, it struck me who she looked like. Damn it, I was glad I came to Coast’s house. “To answer your questions, Sawyer. I don’t belong to anyone. But I am hoping I’ll get to change that soon. And there’s nothing wrong with me. I even have a job.”
She nodded her head. “That’s good. Women like those things. You’re pretty, too. Everybody needs someone. My mom does. She don’t have a husband.”
Sawyer seemed to be a lot like Ally, with no filter. I wished her mother had the same problem. Gabriella shared the bare minimum. The only thing I learned about her—other than sexually—was she had a child.
“Well, now I know why she and Ally hit it off. Let’s go,” Speed said, chuckling as he reached for the door, pulling it open further.
I smiled at Sawyer, and the skin at the corner of her eyes crinkled when she smiled back at me. I had a feeling that if I ever got the opportunity to see a picture of Gabriella at Sawyer’s age, I wouldn’t be able to see a difference.
Everyone filed out of Coast’s house, and since I was last, I pulled the door shut behind me.
“Can you show us some fighting moves now, Dev?” Neely asked as soon as everyone was on the road in front of Coast’s house.
“Sure,” Devil answered and did the brother and sister weird face palm when he bent and picked Neely up.
Bailey sighed. “Really, Lance? You can’t be serious about teaching her to fight. I hope you enjoyed going to meet with the principal because you and she are going to become friends by the time Neely gets through elementary school.”
“I’m going to show her defensive moves so she can protect herself. She doesn’t need to learn how to throw a punch. My sister has that down pat,” Devil bragged, and then he and Neely awarded Bailey with twin smiles.
“I get to learn, too, Uncle Devil. Right, Daddy?” Ally asked, looking up at Speed with hopeful eyes that I knew would make it impossible for him to say no.
“They should know how to protect themselves,” Speed said as he looked at Sami.
She stuck her hand up. “I’m not going to bother arguing. Just know next time you will be sitting beside Devil in the principal’s office,” she said.
“I’m going home to take a nap,” Bailey said and turned toward her and Devil’s house.
“Well, since my girl isn’t old enough, which I am eternally grateful for right now, I’m going home,” Jag said and slung his free arm over River’s shoulder as they walked toward their place with Poppy bouncing on his hip, waving her hand at us.
“Carly has to get ready for her shift,” Crusher said and started leading Carly away.
“Are you trying to get rid of me? I have like two hours before I have to be in,” we heard Carly say, then heard her squeal when Crusher smacked her on the ass. It wasn’t hard to guess what Crusher had in mind for the extra time before Carly reported to the station.
“Going home and laying down sounds like a great plan,” Luna mentioned. Then she and Ghost said goodbye and loaded Karma into his truck and left.
With the brothers having things to do with their families, I would either go home, go to town, or go to the bike shop and work on the bikes we had started building. I would have rather been riding, though, and wished I hadn’t had the earlier meeting, so I could have gone out with the dads.
“Are you going to help, Uncle Flirt?” Ally asked, and as I prepared to tell her I had plans, she added. “You could help Sawyer so it would be even.”
I glanced at Sawyer, who stood beside Sami with her eyes glued to me. Hopefulness reflected from their chocolate depths, leaving me no choice. I swear all females were born with the knowledge of what that look could get them from a man. I had a feeling that between her and Gabriella, they would reel me in without much effort. It wouldn’t take either of them long. If Sawyer were my daughter, I would be in worse shape than Speed.
“Yeah, I got time to show you girls a few things. It would be irresponsible as a former Navy SEAL to leave your training up to the Army,” I found myself saying and grinned when Speed and Devil glared at me. They would have had more to say for sure if the girls hadn’t been there.
“Well, let’s get to it,” Speed said, and Ally, Sawyer, and Neely cheered. We all started walking toward Speed’s house.
“I think I’m going to take Bailey’s lead and lay down while you guys entertain the girls. Which will be happening in the backyard and not inside the house,” Sami said. “And if one of them gets hurt, I’m not going to be happy. Nor will Bailey and Brie,” she warned as she stepped up onto the porch.
“Did you forget I was a medic in the Army?” Devil questioned.
“Not at all,” Sami replied over her shoulder, then opened the door, walked in, and shut it behind her.
“Is it me, or are the pregnancies making the women meaner?” Devil asked in a voice barely above of whisper, as if he were afraid Sami would hear and come back out of the house.
At the same time, Speed and I answered, “You.” Then we started laughing.
Instead of cutting through the house, we started around the side of it toward the back. Devil put Neely back on her feet, and the three girls took off running ahead of us.
“How did you guys get roped into this?” I asked and saw Speed give Devil a scathing look.
