I shake my head. “Nope. Not annoying at all.”

I wince at my pitchy tone. I sound like a chihuahua.

“I’ll call my brother-in-law. He’s handy and could probably fix it sometime this weekend,” Sam says.

My cheeks burn as I try with all my might to keep my eyes on his face.

Don’t look down. Don’t look at Sam’s insanely hot body. Don’t look at his massive cock.

“Sure. Great. Whatever,” I squeak out.

I’m so hot, I feel like my clothes are about to catch on fire.

And then a wave of guilt pummels me. I’m objectifying Sam, the sweetest friend I could ask for. The friend who’s letting me stay at his luxury townhouse for free. The friend who woke up early so I wouldn’t have to go jogging alone.

On top of that, I just broke off my marriage. Yeah, Jake and I have only been married for a couple of weeks, and things between us are technically over…but what does it say about me that I’m lusting after another man’s body after breaking things off with my husband just days ago?

It says that you’re an animal.

That heat coursing through me turns to shame. I grabmy thermos, dump some coffee into it, grab my bag, and make a beeline for the front door.

“I should get going,” I say as I clumsily slide on my flats and open the door. “Bye!” I shout without looking at Sam.

I hop in my car and drive to work, feeling flustered and totally off-kilter…and like a terrible friend.

Chapter 9

Sam

Ipull my car into the visitor spot at Broadmoor Elementary School, where Dakota teaches kindergarten.

I grab the container of stir fry she left on the counter a half-hour ago. I smile to myself, remembering how she reacted to seeing me in a towel this morning.

I shouldn’t feel so smug, but I do. Because I won’t lie—it was a nice little ego boost seeing how flustered Dakota was at the sight of me, how she was so stunned at seeing my body that she forgot to pack her lunch.

I didn’t mean to walk out half-naked in front of her. But I was just getting out of the shower when I heard the ice machine acting up. And then I remembered that I forgot to tell Dakota it was broken, and I know she only drinks iced coffee.

I wasn’t even thinking about how I looked when I walked into the kitchen. I was more concerned about the ice machine and making sure that Dakota could make her coffee the way she likes it before heading off to work.

But then I caught her staring at me. It was exactly howshe stared at me at the Halloween party earlier this season, when I was half-naked.

She liked what she saw. And I liked how much she liked looking at me…

Even though I shouldn’t.

That smug, satisfied feeling evaporates as I remind myself just how wrong this is.

She’s my friend. And the little sister of my teammate. She’s off limits.

I sigh. I had a fun little moment earlier, and that’s all it will ever be. Nothing more.

Container of stir fry in hand, I climb out of my car and walk toward the entrance of the building. I turn left into the office.

An older lady smiles at me. “Hi, there. How can I help you?”

“My friend is a teacher here. Her name is Dakota Richards. She forgot her lunch, and I wanted to bring it to her.”

She starts to frown. “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you into a classroom unless you’re accompanied by a teacher or staff member. Or you’re a scheduled visitor. Security rules.”
