“Is that so?”

“Undoubtedly, Miss Randolph.” He winked at her. “You might need to come back and visit Nairobi so I can take you some place a little more formal than a safari camp.”

She was silent. Had he overstepped? Did she consider him forward? He parked the car at the top of the ridge and turned to her. “Sunny—”

“Alice said I should just kiss you,” she blurted out.

Martin lost the power of speech.

So… not too forward after all.

He watched her as he opened the truck door and shut it. He kept his eyes on hers as he walked around the hood of the truck, to her door, opened it, and helped her out of the Land Cruiser in silence.

Martin took her hand and led Sunny to the outcropping of rocks that jutted up from the grass on the top of the overlook. Then he turned and pulled her closer.

Her body was pressed against his.

“Look up,” he whispered.

She looked up and the stars reflected in her eyes, a million sparks of light that made her mouth open in wonder.

Martin leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.

Her mouth was so small, he smiled.

Sunny blinked. “Martin?”

“Can I tell you a secret?”

“Yes.” No hesitation.

“I’ve never kissed a white woman before.”

Her mouth formed a delightful O. “Is it different?”

Martin kissed her again, this time letting his lips linger and explore the curve of her bottom lip, the defined line of her upper lip, the corners that turned up. He nibbled along her bottom lip and she smiled, opening wider and he took her invitation to explore more.

It was different. Kissing Sunny was different on every level.

She was a guest.

She was an American.

She was irresistible.

He pressed her against the side of the Land Cruiser, the warmth of the engine heating the metal against her back. He placed a hand at the back of her neck, stroking the soft skin there. She sighed into his mouth and it was a surrender.

She put her hands on his waist and pulled him closer, pressing their bodies together. He kept his hips tilted away; his body was already reacting to her taste and scent.

“Sunny.” He peppered kisses along the line of her jaw. “I don’t do this.”

“Neither do I.” Her hands dug into the small of his back.

He closed his eyes and pressed his cheek to hers. “Is this a bad idea?”

Sunny pressed her palm to his other cheek and whispered, “If it is, I don’t care.”
