“And you are awake now?”

Carwyn began to pace. “Listen, Yuri. I am very, veryold. I can stay awake all day if I want to.” A stretch, but Yuri didn’t need to know that. “Now talk to your boss and find my mate. I’ll wait.”

The man must have handed the phone back to Lee, because the next voice he heard was his computer guy. “Okay, they’re going to the guardhouse. They’re all speaking Russian, but it definitely looks like you put a bug in their butt.”

“What an absolutely lovely mental picture, thank you.”

He waited on the phone while there was nothing but muffled voices and static in the background.

“Carwyn, they’re coming back.”

“Do they look worried?”

“I don’t think that’s an expression these guys have. He’s waving for the phone.”

Yuri came back on the line. “Your mate, she was here. Mika put her in car with Pyotr. Good driver.”

“When?”

“Eh, plenty of time. An hour maybe.”

That should have been enough time to get to their house, which was maximum forty minutes from Oleg’s.

“Yuri, do you have a tracker on that car?”

“Of course. You want me to look?”

“Please.” Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.

“Eh, the guard in the house, he is saying the car is only a few minutes from here but not moving. I will go with your man to check it out.”

“Very well.” Carwyn was trying to figure out how Lee could get Brigid back safely if she was trapped in the car for some reason. Maybe that was the panic? She’d realized that the car wasn’t going to be able to get her home in time before dawn.

That was probably it.

His head began to swim. He hadn’t fed in over a week, and he was starting to feel it.

“Carwyn?”

“Yes, Lee.”

“I’m switching the call to the car, so it might break off. If we get cut off, I’ll call you when we find the driver.”

“Good idea.” He was still pacing when the call cut off, just as Lee had predicted. The hands-free system in the van wasn’t the best.

It was maximum ten minutes later that Lee called him back.

“Carwyn, you’re not going to like this.”

“What is it?” He stood and started pacing again. He felt simmering rage bubble beneath his skin.

He was helpless. Completely helpless.

“We found what was left of the car, but it’s not much. Driver is bones. Looks like Brigid lost it and exploded inside.”

He relaxed a little bit. “Her fire never hurts her.”

“Can’t say the same about this driver.” Lee dropped his voice. “Yuri is shouting at someone on the phone in Russian. He seems really pissed. I saw him kick what looked like a melted Taser under a piece of metal.”
