She put her lips to Sorin’s cautiously; a bird ready to take flight if startled. He didn’t move under her ministrations, however, and she realised that he was letting her keep control. She moaned into his mouth, deepening the kiss and flicking her tongue against his lips to gain entrance. She heard him growl as he pulled away just enough to speak. ‘We don’t have the time for this. Gods, I wish we did, but the others will be here soon.’

‘Then I’d better be quick,’ she murmured with a wildness she didn’t feel. Her heart raced as she clumsily pulled his hard cock from his breeches. Her gaze fluttered up to him, looking for reassurance, but his head was thrown back and his eyes closed. She caught the rounded tip of him in her mouth and sucked lightly. He made a guttural sound that vibrated the length of his body, and she smiled in spite of her uncertainty. She did it again, pulling more of him into her as she laved the end with her tongue and moved down the length of him. His hips jerked beneath her as she moved her mouth up and down, using her hand at the base of him, gently sucking until she felt him becoming restless beneath her. Then she pulled harder, pumping him with her hand faster as she took as much of him into her mouth as she could. Suddenly he gave a hoarse cry, bucking beneath her and anchoring her head with a fist in her hair as his seed spurted to the back of her throat. She swallowed instinctively and, when he was finished, she cautiously looked up. He didn’t say anything, just watched her from beneath hooded eyes until she was finally forced to speak, her colour heightening. ‘Was that … all right?’

His lips crashed down onto hers hard as his arms twined around her, pulling her back up and onto his knee. ‘It was more than all right. It was perfect, Lana. You’re perfect,’ he whispered before kissing her savagely once more.

Feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable, Lana broke away from him, though his words thrilled her.

Viktor and Kane appeared in the tent. Lana began to scramble from Sorin’s lap, but he held her fast, tutting. ‘I’m not quite finished with you yet.’

Still, she tried to pull away from him, and he chuckled. ‘Still so easily embarrassed,’ he murmured. He craned his head back at the others. ‘We still have a few moments, yes?’

‘A few, but not many,’ came Viktor’s response. Kane said nothing, his gaze cold and impassable as usual. Lana looked away from them. She realised that the control Sorin had relinquished just moments ago had been taken back completely as he stood with her, turned and pushed her, front down, onto the table.

He eased her breeches down to her knees and thrust his fingers into her, keeping her in place with a hand on her back. She cried out in surprise even as her walls clenched around him.

‘So wet,’ he whispered. He eased his fingers from her slowly and then pushed them in again – hard, and she gripped the table with a whimper. Then he added another finger. The intrusion was almost punishing, but so pleasurable! The friction his movements created made her writhe and moan as he pumped his fingers into her. His hand on her back disappeared and suddenly she felt him moving theother thing. In and out, in and out in time with his fingers. The sensation was so utterly sublime that she forgot she was being watched, forgot that there was anyone else there at all. She moaned loudly, and suddenly her body spasmed and she screamed, clamping down on his fingers so hard they were pushed out of her even as he tried to thrust them inside again.

She was breathing hard as he leaned down and kissed her, at the same time easing the other object from her.

Completely sated, she stayed as she was. She felt him set her clothes to rights and he pulled her gently to standing, holding her as she swayed slightly.

‘You took it out,’ she said, the surprise entering her voice.

He grasped her chin softly. ‘You’ll have little privacy during the crossing to the Islands and I don’t want you worrying about it during the invasion. You’re still a novice, after all. But,’ the hungry look entered his eyes again, ‘I will be putting it back in. And I think you’ll beg me to.’

Her eyes widened slightly at his words. Then she remembered that the others had been in the tent, but when she turned, only a blatantly aroused Viktor was there. Kane was gone.

‘Would that we had the time, little bird,’ Viktor ground out. ‘But we need to go.’

Chapter 27

Viktor

It had been two days of smooth sailing since they’d departed the mainland. Everything seemed to be going according to their plans. They’d left on time with the tide – no mean feat, as they were a fleet twenty ships strong. The winds were in their favour. Even the weather was cooperating and staying fair. So why couldn’t Viktor shake the niggling feeling that something was amiss?

Viktor stood at the prow of their flagship, the first vessel that would breach the guard towers of the largest island in the archipelago and, consequently, where the capital city of the Islands stood. The plan was simple, as the best were: take the capital city. After that, the other, smaller islands would fall into line quickly. Getting past the guard towers and subduing the Islands’ militia would be the most difficult part, but they had men on the inside. Viktor wasn’t worried.

As he stared out to sea, he realised he wasn’t much of anything. Since becoming a Brother, he had always felt at his most alive just before battle. He would be restless, eager to fight, to pit himself against the enemy and find out who was stronger. This he had done over and over for years, but today he felt … impatient, anxious for the battle to be over. His brow furrowed with the awareness that this life was no longer enjoyable to him.

He pushed himself away from the rail with a silent curse. Nothing was simple anymore. For so long his days had been filled with the bare requirements needed to keep him alive, violence, the camaraderie of his unit and their plans for revenge. He’d needed nothing else. Until Lana. She was the only thing that had changed. She had appeared and his days and nights had become complicated. And he wasn’t even sorry. The others weren’t either. Well, Kane, perhaps. Viktor could see he was trying to fight it, trying to keep control over what she was doing to them without even realising it. Perhaps there was truth to what Sorin had said, though he hoped not. If she was a witch, she would be in very grave danger from the entire army of Dark Brothers. If they even suspected, the old laws would be invoked. There wouldn’t even be a trial. They’d simply torture and kill her.

He found himself in the hold without even realising he’d made his way down to the bowels of the ship. Shaking himself out of his thoughts, he turned to take the ladder back up to the small cabin he was sharing with the others when he heard a sound. He turned back and saw the soft glow of a lantern.

‘Is someone there?’ he called.

‘Viktor?’ Lana’s head appeared over some of the larger crates to his left. ‘What are you doing down here?’

He made his way over to her. ‘I was going to ask you the same.’

She shrugged. ‘Sorin was busy and asked me if I’d check the inventory; make sure we didn’t forget anything.’

Knowing Sorin, giving Lana a task down here was probably less to do with inventory and more about keeping her away from the other Brothers without confining her to quarters. As the only woman on the ship, two-hundred bored Brothers and mercenaries had found her to be the most interesting of diversions. She wasn’t in any danger, but it was more than a little annoying that almost every man was making calf eyes at her all the time.

‘A bit fucking late for inventory now we’ve left port,’ he said with a chuckle, and she smiled wanly.

He looked more closely at her. She looked pale, and the faint smudges under her eyes spoke of tiredness or illness. ‘What’s the matter, little bird?’

‘Nothing,’ she said too quickly.
