‘Yes,’ I coo, ‘you're going to tell me who you're working for, aren’t you, you human bitch?’

She can't breathe and she’s beginning to struggle again, but I want her to know how serious I am. Icouldkill her out here and there wouldn’t be even one fucking repercussion if I did. I won't even get in that much trouble with Vic since she’s probably a spy anyway. I mean, she came right here to the breach in the perimeter. She knew exactly where it was.

I let her go just a little bit and she pulls in air, wheezing hard.

‘I don't work for anyone,’ she gasps.

‘Wrong answer.’

I put pressure on her windpipe again, and her pretty, pleading eyes widen.

‘Don't play dumb with me. You know where the hole in the border spell is. How, if you didn’t put it there?’

She claws at my hand, and I let her answer.

‘I don't know, I promise I don’t,’ she squeals in panic. ‘It was just luck. I was trying to get to the road and—’

‘Bullshit! I was only looking for the breach but maybe we do have a spy as well. After all, it was you who came to us with that pretty little bauble that those fae fucks have made sure Vic is just desperate enough to not be able to resist. So where'd you get it, huh?’

‘It was my mom's. She left it to me.’

‘Please!’ I say with a laugh. ‘Do people in your human world actually believe this shit?’

‘It's true!’ She looks indignant rather than terrified and I give her a bemused look.

‘I'm going to ask you one more time,’ I say, ‘and then I'm going to choke the life out of you. Do you understand?’

She nods, looking uncertain.

‘What are you doing out here?’

‘Trying to escape.’ She looks at me like I'm an idiot.

‘Why now? You got what you came for?’

‘I didn't come for anything,’ she says. ‘You guys brought me here, not the other way around. I never asked to come. You guys took my payment, the only thing I had of value, and then told me the deal was done because you handed a few college kids their asses, instead of taking care of my actual problem. I just want to go so I can leave town, and no one kills my last friend and her little kids because of me!’

She shakes her head. ‘Fuck this,’ she says under her breath. ‘I can't do it anymore. Maybe if I was gone, they’d be safe.’

She sounds defeated, and I wonder if she's going to tell me the truth now. Her arms fall to the ground at her sides, and she closes her eyes, breathing deeply and relaxing under me.

‘Just do it,’ she whispers. ‘I’m tired.’

Her head falls to the side, and she breathes in slow. I squeeze, calling her on her bluff, but she doesn't fight me. She just lays under me while I choke her, and I frown. It's not fun anymore and I can tell she’s the type who doesn’t go back on what she says, come hell or high water … But there are other ways I can get her to talk. She doesn't need to sign a contract if I suspect her of activities against the Club. I have carte blanche to do whatever I need to if it means obtaining the information I need.

I slowly shift, letting her breathe again and very gently opening the top button of her jeans, pulling the zip down ever so slowly and watching her face while I do it.

I see her frown as she feels me.

‘What are you doing?’ she asks. ‘Still trying to get truths out of me even though you think I’m a liar?’

My hand delves into her jeans over her underwear, and she tenses, her eyes flying open to find mine.

I keep her locked to the ground by her neck, as I move my legs in order to spread hers a little bit. Not too much, just enough so I can—

My finger slides down her crease and she gasps a little, her eyes not leaving mine, and something hits me, powerful and delicious.

The taste of her is like an expensive dinner and I haven't even lulled her yet. I look down at her face, expecting pleasure. Passion. But it's blank. Expressionless. She feels it, just doesn’t show it.
