Eugenia nodded. “I know. But I didn’t. I went to the cops.”

“What happened when you visited Francis?”

“We just talked. You can’t, you know, touch each other or anything where he’s at. He’s behind glass the whole time.”

“Did he ask any favors of you? Did he ask you to do anything for him that would put you in jeopardy of breaking the law?”

There was a long pause, longer than the others that had taken place during the session.

“No.”

Lindsay knew she was lying.

CHAPTER 48

Nekoosa, Wisconsin Tuesday, July 29, 2025

SHE CLOSED THE LAPTOP AFTER HER SESSION AND HURRIED OUT THEdoor. She had so much to do and so little time to do it. She drove two and a half hours into Milwaukee and found the Walker’s Point neighborhood, where the gun shop was located on West Washington Street. Inside, the smell of metal and Rem oil greeted her. The suppressed pops from the shooting range out back subtly echoed into the display area. She walked to the counter and perused the guns for a moment until a kindly, middle-aged man with a white goatee and an enormous gut stood from the stool and came over to offer his assistance.

“Looking for anything in particular?” he asked in his polite, Midwest accent.

“Yes,” she said. “I’m looking to add a handgun to my collection.”

“Anything specific?”

The type of gun came from memory.

“A Sig Sauer P365 Rose.”

The man nodded. “Excellent choice. We have several Sig Sauers on display.”

“Would I be able to fire one?”

“Of course. We have a full range out back. I would just need a photo ID to run a background check to get things started.”

She nodded and smiled, reached into her purse and produced a driver’s license that she handed over to the portly man. She also produced a CCW permit, which she pushed across the counter. The man took the permit and the ID.

“Eugenia Morgan,” he said as he typed her name into the computer. “Pretty name.”

“Thank you.”

“I’ll run this quickly and pull the Sig from the back.”

When the man returned, she filled out the necessary paperwork and was on the range twenty minutes later. She ran through a full magazine enjoying how the P365 felt in her hand. She was able to handle the mild kickback without a problem, and knew the gun would serve its purpose perfectly.

She would have to use it in the very near future and wanted to make sure that when she did, she hit the person she was aiming for.

“I’m looking for a Kevlar vest.”

The man nodded. “We have several brands. Anything in particular?”

“I’ll take your suggestion if you’re able to show me a few.”
