“Yes,” he rasped.

“Yes,” Ana said. Her smile went from ear to ear.She was so amazingly happy. She clutched the duck and stepped toward Kane.

But…

Something rattled in her precious duck.

Ana frowned.

“False bottom,” Kane explained.“She is a really, really special duck.”

Sure enough, when Ana twisted the bottom of the duck’s dress, a small opening appeared. And a gleaming diamond ring waited inside that hidden bottom.

He notices everything about me.Her breath sawed in and out.“Kane.”Ana cleared her throat.“How long have you had this particular duck?”

“A pretty long time,” he confessed.

“And the ring? How long have you had it?”No way could Grayson have been right. Her head tipped back, and she held her breath as she waited for Kane to say?—

“That was my grandmother’s ring, Ana.I’ve had it for most of my life.”He squared his broad shoulders.“But I’ve been holding it, meaning to give it to you, ever since we met.Well, probably the dayafterwe met, if you want the truth.Took me that long to haul it out.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

A tear leaked down her cheek.

He immediately wiped it away.“We can get a different ring.Or if you don’t want to get married, we don’t have to do it.We can live together. We can date.We can do anything you want.”

“We’regettingmarried. As fast as we can.I love the ring.Don’t you dare get me anything different. And I loveyou.” She rose onto her toes.“I love you.Forever.”

He scooped her up.The way he always did.Held her so easily with that fierce strength of his.He kissed her.Soft.Sexy.

Sweet.

Her badass hero.

Her protector.

Her Kane.

Her heart.

Epilogue

Emerson had seenAna leave Grayson’s temporary office. The other woman had practically flown out of there.Ana had looked happy. And intent.

Emerson knocked lightly on the now closed door.Grayson had been chillingly polite to her ever since Logan Catalano’s death. They really needed to talk.To break the ice between them.Especially if they were going to be working together in the future.Which we are.

“Come in,” Grayson called in response to her knock.

Sucking in a breath and schooling her features, Emerson opened the door. She put a bright smile on her face.“Good news,” she started, determined to be positive, “I’ve gotten the approval to work with?—”

“Shut the door. Then come closer.”He sat behind his desk.He had put on a pair of glasses. She hadn’t realized he wore glasses. They made Grayson look extra sexy, dammit. As if he’d needed any extra help. But the glasses gave Grayson a whole smart and gorgeous vibe that really worked for him.

Who am I kidding?Everything works for Grayson.

She shut the door. Her heels tapped on the floor as she advanced.
