He kept his falsely relaxed pose and quirked a brow at her even as hunger, no, lust tightened every muscle in his body. Two years had passed since their heated kiss.Since the night that she’d nearly died in front of him.

Two years.

She’d haunted him every moment.Filled him with regret.Made him wish that, hell, yes, he’d crossed the line and taken what he wanted so desperately.

If he’d kept kissing Ana that night, she wouldn’t have been alone when Logan came for her.She would never have been terrified. She would never have gotten a knife shoved into her side—yes, he’d seen the blood that day.The blood on her side and the giant bruise and goose egg on her forehead. If he hadn’t stopped kissing her that night, Ana wouldn’t have been hurt.Kane would have been with her, and Logan would not have been able to attack while she was alone.

“You can’t just—you can’t just stop in the middle of an intersection!Do you have a death wish?”Her hands went to her hips.

No hug from her.Check.No big, I-missed-you scene.Got it.She’d gone straight to the death wish portion of the greeting. That was fair.“Doyouhave a death wish?”His voice came out harder than he’d intended. But, what the hell? His voice tended toalwaysbe hard.It had been that way since puberty hit.

She gasped and took a quick step back.

He thought about lunging off the motorcycle, grabbing her, hauling her into his arms, and kissing her.

Nope. You’re supposed to be the bodyguard, remember?Gray is gonna have all his FBI directives again.

But…fuck the directives.

This time, Kane would take what he wanted.

He was looking at what he wanted.

“Kane.You can’t be here.”

Oh, but I can be, and I am.He smiled at her and heard the swift inhalation of her breath.“Nice to know you remember me.”

“You are a hard man to forget.”Another step back.“Kane…”

“Hello, Ana.”I’ve missed you.

She shook her head.“What are you doing here?”

“Same as before, sweetheart.”He should not have used the endearment.Oh, well.Kane figured he was about to do a whole lot of things that he shouldnotdo.Screw it.He’d be making his own game plan this time.

She blinked her big, gorgeous golden eyes at him.

“I’m here to protect you,” he said.Protect you.Fight for you.Eliminate your bastard ex.

And…yeah, he was also there…

To claim you, baby.Because this time, I’m crossing the line.

Kane had one big rule that he liked to follow in life.He never, ever made the same mistake twice.

ChapterTwo

A giant, immovable object blocked the road. And she wasn’t talking about the big, gleaming Harley.

Kane Harte reclined on his bike like he didn’t have a care in the world. He wore a white t-shirt, one that was super stretched because of his massive arms and shoulders.Seriously, had the man gottenbiggerin the last two years? It sure appeared that way.He had a dark ball cap pulled low over his brow, and a short and—dang it—sexy beard covered his hard jaw line.

He lounged and kept those arms crossed over his chest and…

“Do you just hang around in intersections all the time?”The only thing she could think to say because he’d pretty much shocked Ana straight to her core. How was he in Gulfport? How was this happening? Two years had passed without a single word from him.Two.Years.

And three days.

Not that she’d counted or anything. Some dates were just hard-core burned in a woman’s memory. The date he’d left her?The date that she’d almost died?
