“I do not love him.”She thought Turner Mitchell was nice. That was all.“But I have gone out on a few dates with this man, so don’t you think it will be weird if I’m suddenly living with a different boyfriend?Hmmm?Don’t you thinkthatmight be suspicious?”
“Are you fucking him?”Kane demanded.
Her mouth dropped.Just dropped.Ana was surprised it didn’t slam into the floor.
“Time out!”Grayson was on his feet now, too.“Hey, Kane.I’ve got a stellar idea.Let’s take a walk outside and get some air.”
Kane did not move.“Are.You.Fucking.Him?”
“What does that matter?”She was not, in fact, fucking Turner, but for some reason, Ana didn’t make that confession.Anger twisted and seethed inside of her as her hands pressed harder to the table.“You don’t know me.Not anymore. You have zero say in what happens in my life.Who I fuck or who I do not fuck…” Making the full disclosure that she had not fucked anyone in over two years was just not happening right then.A woman had her pride.“If I am fucking Turner or not—how does that matter?Whywould it matter?”
“It matters,” he snarled right back.“Because I am trying to decide if I have to kill him or not.”
Her breath left her in a rush.A squeak of sound because surely, he had not just said those words to her.
“Outside!”A roar from Grayson.“We are going outside right now.Understand? And we are not killing anyone.”He grabbed Kane’s shoulders. The two men were pretty close in size.Prettyclose.Not the exact same.Kane was still bigger. In the shoulders and in general height.
But Grayson was clearly furious, and he shoved Kane hard.He kept shoving until they were at the house’s rear door.
Then Grayson tossed Ana a broad smile. One that never reached his eyes.“Things are completely under control,” he assured her.“Kane is not going to kill the guy you’re dating. No worries at all.”
He pushed Kane outside.
The door slammed.
And Ana realized that she did, in fact, have plenty of worries.
ChapterFour
“I am goingto kill him.If he’s fucking her, he’s a dead man.”Kane’s breath shuddered in and out.In and out.He paced to his bike, spun on his heel when he reached the motorcycle, and stalked right back to a watchful Gray.“Dead.”
“Yeah, so, first, calm down.”
Kane snarled at him.He reached his friend and, immediately, Kane turned on his heel and began to march back for the bike.
“Second, and, you know, stop me if you’ve heard this before, but…don’t threaten to kill people in front of a Fed.Even if the Fed is your BFF.”
Kane had reached the motorcycle. His back teeth clenched so hard that his jaw ached. He’d waited too long. He’d stayed away too long. And, dammit, what the hell had he thought would happen? That she would put herself in some freaking sexual isolation for two years?Just becausehehadn’t fucked anyone since he’d last seen her, that didn’t mean she hadn’t gotten involved with someone else.
I will kill the sonofabitch.Kane spun away from the motorcycle.
“I think I should give you a third because you didn’t listen to items one and two, did you?Okay, here we go.Third, she didn’t say she’d fucked him.”
Kane stopped mid-stalk.
“I mean, Ana didn’t say shehadn’t,either, so I’m not saying go get your hopes up.I’m saying…well, go back to items one and two.Calm down and stop threatening to kill the new guy.”Gray shrugged.“We both know you’re not gonna kill some stranger just because he’s sleeping with Ana.”
Uh, no.They did not both know that fact.Gray was seriously underestimating the rage and dark jealousy flowing through Kane’s veins.“You told me that I had to pull her out of hell.”
“Yes.You did that for Ana once before, and I want you to do it again.Look, a cover story change is not a big deal.”Gray advanced toward him.“So you don’t play the role of her boyfriend.Whatever.You can be her cousin.”
The man was not serious.
Gray’s voice turned thoughtful.“Maybe even her stepbrother.”
“Are you shitting me right now?”Herbrother?
“This could work.”Now Gray was fully enthusiastic.“A family member would have the same all-access pass to her life. And she could keep the current boyfriend she has and go about her business.Perfection in motion.”
