“I’m good,” he said softly.
He wasn’t good.
“Did you get scratched or bitten?”he asked me.
“No, we’re okay.”
“You’re a hell of a fighter.I’m glad I was able to help you train. It’s been an honor.”
“Togg,” I all but shouted.
I pressed my fingers over his and shoved my weight down to stop the bleeding.
“Honor,” he said again, but this time much softer.
Maylin dropped on her knees beside me.I’d forgotten about her.She could fix him.She worked with Axel all the time.
She peeled back our hands to examine the wound. She looked up at me and shook her head. When I looked down, I could see his intestines and so much blood.
I took Togg’s hand in mine and rubbed my other one over his fingers.
“It’s been my honor,” I whispered to him.
He looked up at me, and his jaws pulled back.He grinned showing all his teeth. His eyes glazed over with the grin in place.
Chapter Forty-Seven
Marinah
After fighting with Axel over the fact that the gunshot wound in my side was nothing, I gave into his glare and lay on a damned cot beside King.
Axel had performed his usual miracle and removed the bullet from King’s chest. He’d had to suction air from the chest cavity due to a collapsed lung.Another bullet was removed from his shoulder.King was breathing comfortably, his body healing.
Now it was my turn, and Axel grumbled the entire time.
“Here’s the thing,” he said.“If you die from a wound I can’t fix, King will kill me.If he dies, you will kill me.I’m stuck between two crazy people with a death wish. What’s a doctor to do?”
I rolled my eyes.
He decided it was a good time to dig for the bullet.I grimaced and glared.
“Got the sucker,” he said with a smile.
“You enjoy dishing out pain,” I said while trying to breathe.
“The wound had almost closed over. That’s why it hurts so much. But, if I thought making these procedures more painful would make you stop, I would have no problem hurting you needlessly.”
“You’re all heart.”
“Marinah.”
My head whipped around.King was watching me.
“The Barnes?”he asked.
“Dead.”
“Good.”
