“I doubt it. But I do hope someone will find peace in having their loved ones found. Every story needs an end.”
If only their story had an end.
Grandma continued. “I should be there late afternoon tomorrow. Blake says you’re moving to my condo.”
The move had been decided on only moments ago. Hastings Security was on top of things. “The local police have requested I don’t stay in the hotel. Paul must comply.” That conversation would not be fun.
“Not sure about that. Your contract for this last season is rather convoluted. I’ll get Donetta and our lawyer on it. Now, about that boy...”
“Andrew Hastings or that snake, Storm Tordon?”
“The bodyguard. Mrs. Blake says he did his duty and reported the incident when it happened. She says his report reads almost as long as the video clip. It’s much longer than the explanation you gave me. Have you fired him yet?”
“Blake fired him.”
“I’m not sure that was the right move.”
“It doesn’t matter. Andrew is leaving my detail today anyway and turning it over to his brother.” He was leaving for her, but she’d pushed him away.
“Why would he quit?”
Jordan weighed her options. Lying would be easier, but Grandma would be here in two days or less and see the truth. “Because we don’t have a traditional bodyguard/client relationship.”
There was a long pause. “I warned you about this. What did you do?”
“A lot of late-night phone calls, and then we could laugh together, and last night we kissed. I know you warned me. It just happened. But I told him this morning there can be no us.”
“Well, at least he had the decency to leave you.”
“He says he can’t guard me well if his emotions are engaged.”
The pause was longer this time. “I don’t know what to say. You’ve heard my lectures, yet one thing you said gives me pause.”
“What was that?”
“You said you laugh together. With everything going on, if he is bringing laughter into your life, I’m not sure what to think.”
Jordan let out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding.
“I assume last night’s kiss wasn’t anything like the video.”
“No. Definitely not. It was sweet.” And he kissed me. Jordan wanted to turn that thought over and over. Their first real kiss.
However, Grandma kept talking. “I want to meet him. Don’t let him leave before I get there.”
Great. Another disaster in the making. “His family is amazing. Even though Blake fired Hastings, they have been rallying around me, working out a security plan, and making sure I have the best bodyguards available. They are trying to get their number-one competitor to bid for the job with Blake. Who does that?”
“Their competitor? You’re sure?”
“I’m not sure of the dynamics. They seem to have a working relationship of sorts.”
“Should I encourage Blake to take the bid?”
“Either that or stay with Hastings. Andrew did nothing wrong the day of the video. It was my choice to take Storm’s stupid dare. Andrew didn’t even kiss me back.”
“Do you like this bodyguard?”
It was Jordan’s turn for a long pause. “I dumped him. It doesn’t matter.”
