“Insurance,” Kyle, the bass player, said. “Can never be too careful.”

“Well, get out of my way because I’m gettin’ hitched.”

They chuckled and as the music played, one of them opened the door to the sanctuary. The bridesmaids and groomsmen filed in two by two. The same people who’d been at Lincoln and Sadie’s wedding. Sadie and Lincoln brought up the rear and then it was Eve’s turn.

She went a little faster than she should have, losing step with the music, and Hank slowed her down.

“He’s not goin’ anywhere, darlin’.”

“I’ve just waited so long for this. If I could, I would run to him.”

But she slowed down, keeping time with the wedding march as they made their way down the aisle. Everyone stood. Mima and Brenda were already clutching tissues to their quivering lips. Annabeth gave Eve a thumbs up. Priscilla, who’d come back for the wedding with her daughter, gave Eve a wink.

Eve glanced at them all and smiled, trying to appreciate this moment and all the love and support coming at her big as a Gulf Coast wave during a hurricane. But as was usually the case, within seconds her gaze gravitated to the man waiting for her. Her whole heart. The man with the dimpled smile. The love of her life. Her handsome groom, older now but still the boy she’d fallen for before she understood love. She saw him, and everything fell into place and locked tight in her heart.

Jackson took a step toward them, as if he, too, couldn’t wait.

And Eve walked confidently toward her future.
