He just had one final line to deliver.

“Please,” the blonde sobbed wretchedly, although he remained relaxed and trusting in Akira’s arms. On the floor across the room, his runepad listened patiently. “Help me.”

Help me.

With those pre-agreed words, the massive screen behind the pair of them abruptly flared to life, Indira’s handiwork making it flash a vivid and searingly pure white.

Facing away, Akira witnessed its effect on the room. Everything was thrown into sharp, clinical relief, shadows suddenly cast upon the far wall. And Robby and Theta flinched as one as their retinas were overwhelmed, both instinctively flinging up their arms to cover their eyes.

Akira shoved Kyle aside, raised the gun, and aimed it at the asshole who had dared threaten his family.

The bullet cracked into the doorframe and missed Theta by a hair’s breadth, so close that for a moment, Akira thought he might have hit him after all.

But then the bastard was gone.

Fuck.

Kyle

Urgh, I've been on my feet all shift and they ache

Akira

Then stop messaging and go lie down.

Kyle

Can’t. Bed’s too big and cold without you

Akira

Your sentimentality is appalling.

Kyle

It got you to answer, didn't it? ;)

Akira

Fine. I’m coming to bed.

Kyle

Bring a bottle of water and that smug mouth of yours.

Akira

As long as you realise one of those is staying closed.

“Get down!” Kyle yelled, lunging forward, and for one sickening moment Akira thought he was talking to him. Trust his huge-hearted boyfriend to sacrifice himself for Akira’s safety, but alsodamn himbecause they both knew Akira had the best chance between the pair of them of ending this. If Kyle stopped him from chasing Theta down, if he put Akira’s family at risk for him...could he forgive such a thing?
