He just had one final line to deliver.
“Please,” the blonde sobbed wretchedly, although he remained relaxed and trusting in Akira’s arms. On the floor across the room, his runepad listened patiently. “Help me.”
Help me.
With those pre-agreed words, the massive screen behind the pair of them abruptly flared to life, Indira’s handiwork making it flash a vivid and searingly pure white.
Facing away, Akira witnessed its effect on the room. Everything was thrown into sharp, clinical relief, shadows suddenly cast upon the far wall. And Robby and Theta flinched as one as their retinas were overwhelmed, both instinctively flinging up their arms to cover their eyes.
Akira shoved Kyle aside, raised the gun, and aimed it at the asshole who had dared threaten his family.
The bullet cracked into the doorframe and missed Theta by a hair’s breadth, so close that for a moment, Akira thought he might have hit him after all.
But then the bastard was gone.
Fuck.
Kyle
Urgh, I've been on my feet all shift and they ache
Akira
Then stop messaging and go lie down.
Kyle
Can’t. Bed’s too big and cold without you
Akira
Your sentimentality is appalling.
Kyle
It got you to answer, didn't it? ;)
Akira
Fine. I’m coming to bed.
Kyle
Bring a bottle of water and that smug mouth of yours.
Akira
As long as you realise one of those is staying closed.
Kyle
Not on my watch
